Chapter 163 The Church's Song
Chapter 163 The Church's Song
"What, you see some shadow in me too? I must say, your constant overreaction will eventually make me start shooting at thin air."
Milo had lost count of how many times old Theon had outwitted thin air.
He now even suspected that there might be some basis for the claim that old Theon was deemed to have violent tendencies...
But old Theon didn't respond. He just stared at the mist behind him for a long time, then put on a disgusted expression and said to the mist, "Are you charlatans able to predict the future? You always know we're coming in advance?"
After hearing Old Theon's words, Milo squinted at the mist, waiting for the person inside to emerge.
Soon, he saw a figure in a gray cloak slowly emerge from the mist.
The other person lifted the hood covering their head, revealing a handsome face that always wore a polite smile.
"It was just a coincidence."
This man was none other than De La Chaux, the clerk of the Golden Law Church.
It had been a long time since I'd seen him, and he looked exactly the same as before. He still had that refined and courteous demeanor, and his every move exuded a subtle sense of piety and humility. But if you looked closely, you could detect a hint of arrogance in his eyes.
Milo had witnessed Dillah's methods firsthand.
At least back then, Harrison of the Sherman family wasn't qualified to compete with him.
There's a saying circulating within the law enforcement system: church officials are like a pack of vultures or wild dogs; their keen noses can lead them to the crime scene in no time.
Perhaps this is already a well-known law: wherever there are dead people, there will be the gray robes of the church. People have become accustomed to this.
So much so that they forgot to consider a crucial question: why is the church so concerned with the dead?
……
“I knew it. If you gentlemen of the law enforcement were willing to investigate, you would eventually find your way here. On a side note, it’s a pleasure to see you again, Mr. Valrocan. You look very good in that black trench coat.” Dillah was always the same, able to act familiar with anyone.
"So you're saying you're ready to be completely honest the moment we come knocking? What were you doing for the past year and a half?" Old Theon calmly looked at Dillah Shaw, his index finger and thumb holding a cigarette between his fingers.
“Before? I’ve been waiting for you all along.” Dillash completely ignored old Theon’s sarcasm and led them across Prayer Square with a smile, straight to the first magnificent cathedral.
When the three were still about ten meters away from the cathedral, they began to hear some melodious hymns. The obscure words were sung in a high-pitched tone, accompanied by the sounds of classical instruments. All these sounds came from the depths of the cathedral, revealing a sacred, pure and inviolable majesty.
The interior decoration of the cathedral truly embodies the concept of the "golden rule".
The stone pillars, tables, chairs, reliefs, murals, and even the glass decorations on the ceiling inside the church are all in a golden hue. Under the interplay of numerous candlelight, the entire cathedral appears magnificent and resplendent. Moreover, this visual effect is different from the extravagant atmosphere of the nobility, giving people a more profound sense of nobility.
Even the most restless person will find their emotions calmed and can join in and enjoy this moment of tranquility once they enter this atmosphere.
Of course, Milo and Theon the Elder are exceptions.
"You must have burned quite a few candles tonight," Milo said, looking at the cathedral filled with firelight. The golden tree relief at the very front of the cathedral, in particular, was almost blindingly bright.
“I heard that a man named Henry Goebbels across the ocean made a carbonized bamboo filament glow continuously for 400 hours in a glass bottle. Perhaps in the near future, we won’t need to burn so many candles and kerosene.” Dillah recalled some interesting stories he had heard recently.
Old Theon scoffed at Dirac's words: "400 hours, huh? When are you going to invite the God of the Golden Tree down to have a drink with us?"
"The Golden Tree is the Golden Tree, not a specific god." Dirac seemed completely oblivious to old Theon's strange words, and continued to solemnly explain the doctrine of the Golden Law.
However, in Milo's opinion, regardless of what the Golden Tree was, at least the first part of Dirac was not lying. The guy named Henry Goebbels did indeed invent the light bulb before Edison, but the unfortunate man just didn't know how to promote the technology to make himself rich.
What surprised Milo was the church's excellent information dissemination.
But then I thought about it and it made sense. The church is an institution composed of a group of high-level scholars, and their focus on cutting-edge technology is definitely beyond that of ordinary people.
The Golden Rule team has gathered almost all of the country's most cutting-edge researchers, so it wouldn't be surprising if Dillash pulled a giant light bulb out of his pocket right now.
……
Passing through the cathedral filled with the melodious chants, Milo and old Theon arrived at the more solemn annex.
Every wall here is covered with exquisite murals, but unlike the religious paintings that Milo was familiar with, none of the murals inside the Golden Rule Church focus on humans. Instead, they depict distorted light, magnificent landscapes, and most frequently, vine-like plants.
On the entire ceiling covered with murals, Milo couldn't find a single human face with full features and a compassionate expression.
It seems that, just as De La Shaw said, the church does not believe in any "specific God".
They often use the term "Old God" in their daily lives, but unlike the religions that Milo is familiar with, they don't have a specific object of worship, such as Allah or an omnipotent God.
It's hard to imagine what kind of belief a group of researchers at the forefront of the times would hold.
At least, based on the murals that Milo has seen so far, he has not yet found the answer.
……
After leading Milo and old Theon to a large hall in the back room, Dirac stopped.
"I need you two to wait here for a while. We can only freely enter and exit the tower after the choir finishes singing tonight. This is one of the rules, so please cooperate."
"A chorus?" Milo looked around.
He was certain that he had not found any singers in the back hall.
As for the exact direction from which the melodious female singing voice came, Milo couldn't tell for the time being.
"No need to look anymore, the choir never shows their faces," Dillashau reminded them.
