Chapter 152 Copper Products
Chapter 152 Copper Products
Milo's current information is fragmented.
All he knew was that Raven and his teacher belonged to the Monsis school, and it was clear from their conversation that this school was affiliated with the church, or at least had been, but later diverged in their academic direction.
However, the Ravens also have an inseparable relationship with the Solomon Gang, and how these two forces became involved remains unknown.
Dillashau's position is also very peculiar.
This person has been mysterious from beginning to end. Milo still doesn't know what role he plays in the church, let alone why he is investigating the whereabouts of the totem.
In fact, the best option is still to keep your distance from people like him.
Unfortunately, no matter what Milo does, he inexplicably gets involved with the church.
……
"I don't think you approached him; he approached you himself, did he?"
Although Milo didn't have much contact with De La Shaw, he was familiar with the guy's way of doing things. He was like a fly; once a case with a strange smell occurred somewhere, he would come running to join in the fun. This guy's job seemed to be quite different from other church officials. He was neither responsible for preaching or teaching, nor did he participate in any church or other organization's activities. He spent his days hanging around in some shady places...
“As you know, the living are under the jurisdiction of the law enforcement, while the dead are handled by the church. Ever since the Great Plague, those guys in gray robes have been professionals at disposing of corpses. Any slight disturbance can't be hidden from the church's eyes and ears.” Old Theon nodded.
"But it must be admitted that these charlatans are the most professional when it comes to certain obscure knowledge systems. After all, they saved the country from that catastrophe, didn't they?"
"So you want to know how these charlatans view this case?" Milo asked slowly. "What did he say?"
“He said the students were performing a heretical religious ritual, a special ritual recorded in the Fenich Manuscript,” old Theon recalled, pressing his finger to his brow.
"He said the original author of the manuscript was Wilfred Finich, a colonial scholar. All the contents of the manuscript were copied and translated from an even older ancient book. The Gus Society obtained a fragment of the manuscript. Normally, such academic classics would have long been rejected and purged by the academic community and are now only kept in the hands of certain special collectors, because very few people can decipher the highly subjective codes written by the compilers. But those kids from the Gus Society seem to have really deciphered something incredible and even replicated the ritual recorded on the fragment..."
Milo squinted, listening intently.
This information is almost entirely consistent with Enid's previous inferences.
It should be noted that Enid had only been in the Gus Association for a short period of time.
It's conceivable that this association isn't just a group of unruly kids causing trouble. To some extent, they do have a certain depth of research in the field of occultism, after all, all the members are top students from prestigious universities.
This reminded Milo of that mysterious place in the Miskatonic River basin.
If the association's founder, Gus, was able to create such an association after only a short period of exchange and study there, then what kind of special existence must the mysterious organization located in that basin be?
As for the church, they can be considered a higher-level academic organization.
This group is the only group of madmen to date who have combined various cutting-edge theories, technologies and theology, and they have already proven their true talent during the Great Plague.
They also believe that the Fenich Manuscript records a heretical ritual.
“So, it means that Ethan Field led a group of people to perform some kind of ritual in this attic, which resulted in the disappearance of nine people, including himself. You could say that.” Milo paced back and forth in the attic. “Dilashaw didn’t get involved in the investigation?”
Old Theon shook his head: "The dead are under their jurisdiction, but there was no clear death record in that case, so he was not qualified to intervene in the investigation. I don't know why, but the higher-ups in law enforcement were very tight-lipped about the information in this case, especially when it came to the church."
But Milo doesn't think so.
Dillah Shaw would never stand idly by simply because he was prohibited from participating; that's not his style.
If he really didn't get involved, then there are only two possibilities: either there was nothing worth the risk, or he had already gotten what he wanted.
"Was the attic like this back then?" Milo looked at the empty attic interior and said, "I mean, weren't there any other clues found at the scene? Like props used in the ritual, or totems painted on the floor or something?"
Milo had witnessed such extremely evil and bizarre rituals in the underground rainwater pipe network. He knew that these kinds of rituals always used certain props or totems when they were performed, such as the star pattern that Robben had pulled out on the ground, or the eyeballs he had gouged out of the victims' eye sockets...
“I didn’t see any totems, but I did see a few rough bronze items,” old Theon recalled. “Bronze items?” Milo’s brow furrowed.
“The bottles and jars, and the jewelry-like items, are all unfinished products in the manufacturing stage. We have tested them and found nothing suspicious,” Old Theon said.
Where are those things stored now?
"It's in our evidence storage room."
"Let's go back and take a look."
……
...
It was already late at night when I rushed back to the law enforcement station without stopping.
Milo wasted most of the night on the road. By the time they arrived at the South City Law Enforcement Office and obtained the key to the evidence vault, it was already around 3 a.m.
In an evidence storage room with dozens of shelves, the two of them finally found the box with the corresponding case number after a lot of effort, and saw the few pieces of scrap metal that old Theon had mentioned.
The box contained only six bronze utensils.
It included two slender bookmarks, two small candlesticks, a bracelet, and a brooch without any totems engraved on it. As old Theon said, they were all unfinished products, without polishing or carving. They were all very rough and could only be considered as preliminary pressed shapes.
Old Theon, holding a kerosene lamp, stood behind Milo and said boredly, "I've searched through all this stuff, but I can't find its origin. The surviving brats can't explain where it came from either. It's not a valuable clue."
Milo looked through the list in the notebook and discovered the problem:
"The list clearly says seven items, but there are only six in this box?"
"Perhaps I'm mistaken?" Old Theon replied casually.
Just then, a clearly visible shadow flashed by in the corner of Milo's field of vision.
again!
Milo was startled.
This was already the umpteenth time he had seen a strange dark figure inside the law enforcement office.
Old Theon was standing right behind her, holding a kerosene lamp, without moving an inch. Yet, the silent, dark shadow slid gleaming across the corner floor, sending shivers down Milo's spine.
He put down the list in his hand and stared at the deepest corner of the dimly lit evidence archive for a long time.
But the shadow never reappeared.
With a mix of trepidation and excitement, Milo walked to that corner.
He moved a heavy box of evidence aside.
I saw a copper ring lying on the floor, covered in dust.
Like the other six pieces of evidence, the ring was an unfinished product, only a basic outline was created, and even the joint of the ring was not completely welded, it was not polished, the surface was very rough, and there were no traces of any engraving or pattern...
Milo squatted down and picked up the bronze ring.
"If I remember the list correctly, it contains seven bronze items."
