Chapter 148 Former President
Chapter 148 Former President
“Maggie Green, right?”
Milo reached out and touched the tombstone.
A few seconds later he shook his head:
"You've told me all this just so I can tell you how Maggie died, right?"
“I know how Maggie died, she fell off a cliff.” Joey looked at Milo with a puzzled expression.
“Fine.” Milo shrugged. “Stop pretending. You haven’t seen Maggie’s body either, otherwise you wouldn’t be so paranoid about seeing Maggie’s shadow.”
Milo pointed to Maggie Green's grave and said:
"All this talk of tests and trials is nonsense. You're just trying to get information out of me. The only reason you agreed to see me today is because of my status as an enforcer, right?"
“Why don’t we just drop the pretense? You want to know the real cause of Maggie Green’s death, and you hope to get some information from me. As for me, I’m not here to join your Ghost Society; I’m here to investigate.”
Milo knelt down in front of Joey, staring intently into his eyes:
“I can tell you definitively now that this grave is empty, and Maggie’s body is not inside at all. This is the information I can give you. If you don’t believe me, you can dig up the grave and see for yourself later.”
After Milo finished speaking, Joey was stunned.
All the strange expressions he had been making earlier vanished in that instant, leaving only astonishment.
He opened his mouth wide, and after a long pause, he finally managed to speak:
"How...how did you know I dug up this grave?"
"..." Milo's lips twitched: "That's really weird. How was I supposed to know you had already dug it up? I just told you to go and verify it later. I'm speechless."
"You're right! Maggie's body isn't in the grave at all, there's nothing in the grave! You know the truth, don't you? You must know! Please tell me! Please tell me how Maggie died, okay? I should have guessed it sooner, it was Maggie's soul, it must be, those figures I saw were Maggie's soul, she was guiding me to investigate, she wanted me to know the truth!!"
Joey suddenly became agitated.
He frantically grabbed his hair, his face contorted in a horrifying, manic expression.
Milo had no idea what was wrong with this guy, so he reached out and pulled Iniel behind him.
Joey pleaded with Milo.
He was convinced that Milo must know the truth about the accident and begged Milo to tell him the truth.
But Milo turned and asked:
"How come you, the president, know nothing?"
“After Maggie’s accident, many members left the association, and the original president also left, leaving only me and a few other old members. To be honest, the Gus Association was basically disbanded after that incident, and it is now in a… reorganization phase.” Joey slumped to the ground and shook his head helplessly.
"How much do you know about the Fenich Manuscript?" Milo wasn't going to beat around the bush.
After hearing what Joey said, he felt that he had probably wasted his time today.
“This is it! The former president bought a fragment of this manuscript on the black market and used it as research material for the association’s mysticism. At the time, almost all the core members participated in deciphering the contents recorded on the fragment, but for a long time there were no results, and then the matter was shelved…” Joey tried hard to recall.
"I don't understand what this has to do with Maggie's death, and why we're talking about this?"
“Because that’s the information I wanted, you idiot.” Milo retorted to Joey without any politeness.
"Where is that fragment of the manuscript now?"
"I...I don't know." Joey gave a very awkward, bitter smile.
"After Maggie's incident, many people left the association. They took some of their belongings from the association, and some even left the city... Perhaps, perhaps the former president took the torn pages."
Joey was indeed obsessed, constantly talking about Maggie. "Go find her. If you still want to know how Maggie died, go and get the Fenich Manuscript back for me, by any means necessary," Milo said, staring at Joey.
The other person nodded frantically, a look of joy on their face:
"Don't worry, I'll go look for it right away! I'll definitely find it, I'm going right now!"
He scrambled to his feet and tried to run out of the cemetery, but Milo grabbed him.
"Tell me the name of that former president first."
“Ethan Field,” Joey replied.
"Alright, go ahead. Once you find a clue to the Fenich manuscript, come find me at the South City Enforcement Office." Milo released his hand, letting Joey run off.
This guy was wearing some kind of weird ring on his hand, and it almost cut Milo's palm until it bled when he ran.
Milo looked at the faint mark on his palm and shook his head helplessly.
He glanced back at Enid and shrugged.
“Well, at least I have a new name now, Ethan Field.” Milo secretly memorized the unfamiliar name.
You should have some impression of this person, right?
“Ethan? Of course he is.” Enid was still reeling from the eerie atmosphere and hadn’t quite recovered. She looked strangely at Joey, who was running wildly out of the cemetery, and muttered to herself:
“When I joined the Gus Association, Ethan was the president at the time. He was two years older than me and was already a fourth-year student at Nanwei Academy. He was a very strange person. He was very aloof and rarely appeared in association activities despite being the president. I only saw him a few times.”
"It's getting dark, let's go back first."
Milo noticed that it was getting darker.
Staying in a suburban cemetery at this time of year is not a good idea.
“Oh right, let’s go back, let’s go back.” Enid realized this too.
She was still wearing the evening gown she wore to the banquet, her upper body, shoulders, and arms were bare, and she began to feel a slight chill in the air around her.
"I never expected the Gus Association to be in such a big mess, to the point that it's on the verge of disbanding."
Enid muttered to herself.
She suddenly asked Milo:
"Hey, how do you know Maggie's grave is empty? Don't you not know her?"
“Uh, the keen observation skills that law enforcement officers must have.” Milo pointed to his head:
"Learn it slowly. If you want to become a law enforcement officer, you also need to master this ability."
This is the most absurd reason ever.
Enid, however, actually believed it and stood there nodding seriously.
Milo muttered to himself—this is really strange. Now that the aftereffects are gone, he can't even peek at the dead anymore…
While talking to Joey, Milo quietly drew a totem on the tombstone with his finger.
But he never saw any of Maggie's memories of the dead.
That leaves only one possibility: Maggie isn't in the grave at all.
