Ke-style law enforcement officers
Chapter 145 Spy Meeting
Chapter 145 Spy Meeting
About an hour after leaving Sherman Manor, Milo and Enid appeared in the eastern industrial district of Nanwei City.
There is a canal here that leads directly to the eastern sea.
Large factories line both sides of the canal. Compared to the city center, it's not exactly smoky and chaotic, but there's always a faint smell of kerosene in the air. Some people might like this smell, but Milo doesn't.
This canal runs through half of Nanwei City, and its upstream section has a famous dock—Confession Dock, the place where Milo and Emma were captured by the Sherman family's assassins last time.
The two stood by the river.
Enid had changed out of the high heels she wore at the banquet and into flat boots, but she was still wearing the voluminous dress.
She placed one leg on a stone pier by the river, reached under her skirt, and took off Milo's weapon pouch, handing it to its owner.
Her bold and unrestrained demeanor was completely different from her reserved and demure image at the banquet.
"I guess I got to experience what it's like to have a gun hanging in your crotch."
Enid patted the hem of her skirt.
Milo strapped his weapon pouch back to his waist, ignoring Enid's words, and looked at the murky canal in front of him, saying, "I originally thought this occult association would have a relatively respectable base."
“Before I left the organization, their base was set up at the old site of the Nanwei Grand Library, but later I don’t know why it was moved to another place. Maybe it was discovered, or maybe the old building was demolished and rebuilt. I’m not sure.” Enid took out a crumpled piece of paper from her small bag and carefully examined the handwriting on it.
As she searched for the meeting place provided by the Gus Association according to the description on the note, she asked Milo:
"I have to ask that question again: what do you want from the Gus Association?"
"Investigate the case."
Milo knew that no matter what he said, Enid would ask the same question again after a while, so he simply saved his breath and said less.
"Really?" The simple words "investigating a case" seemed to have struck a nerve with this guy, and Enid's eyes instantly lit up: "Yay! I didn't expect to be involved in a real investigation before even becoming a law enforcement officer! Woohoo!"
"Take control of that excited look on your face, take control, you know?" Milo poked Enid's shoulder with his index finger.
“Yes, boss, I will follow your instructions.” Enid nodded emphatically.
She quickly rubbed her face with her hands, smoothing out the corners of her mouth that she couldn't help but raise.
Then, standing beside the stone piers by the river, he began counting the stone piers one by one, referring to the words recorded on the slip of paper.
“Counting from the bridge, it’s the 39th stone pier.”
"Yes, this is it. Let's stand here for a while, and a boat should come to pick us up soon."
Enid said to Milo.
Milo turned his head to look at the note in Enid's hand.
He recognized the common script of this world, but he was completely unfamiliar with the symbols written on the note in Enid's hand. It must have been written in some obscure foreign script that the Gus Association deliberately used, and it even contained some complicated formulas.
"It's like an undercover spy meeting," Milo muttered.
Enid brought her face close to Milo's and pointed to her eyes, saying, "See my dark circles and eye bags? I didn't sleep all night to decipher the riddle on this note, and I had to get ready for the banquet at 6 a.m. Do you understand my good intentions?"
“You should have given the note to Emma; that way, maybe none of us would have to stay up all night,” Milo said.
"Tch." Enid wrinkled her nose and snorted a few times.
Time flies.
It's around 3 p.m. now.
In about two hours, it will start to get dark. The most noticeable effect of the overcast weather in Nanwei City is that it makes people drowsy.
Enid, who had been bouncing around all day, began to look sleepy, especially now that she was in a state of boredom while waiting.
Milo had lost count of how many times she yawned.
"I have a suggestion. Why don't you go home and rest first? If a boat comes along later, I can just board it..."
"Don't even think about it!" Enid protested, waving her little fist.
“Okay, then would you like to tell me what the tests the Gus Association uses for membership applicants?” Milo asked.
"Well... it varies from person to person. To be honest, I asked other members the same question when I was in the Gus Association, but the test requirements for each person when joining were different. As for me, they gave me a letter and asked me to read it and tell them what kind of relationship existed between the writer and the recipient."
"So what did you say?" Milo asked.
“I’ll say it’s an old man’s letter to his dead cat, whatever’s most outrageous and impossible.” Enid blinked. “That’s my opinion. If they ask you to do something similar later, just do it. If you can confuse them, you’ve succeeded.”
"So this is what they call mysticism?" Milo chuckled.
"Of course not. Actually, those people do have a certain amount of knowledge, they just have some mental issues."
……
Just as the two of them were taking turns criticizing the Gus Association, a small boat slowly drifted to the riverbank.
The boatman was an old man.
He tossed two black cloth bags toward Milo and Enid, and Milo easily caught them.
“This wasn’t a part of the program before.” Enid looked puzzled.
But before she could finish speaking, Milo put one of the bags over Enid's head, reached out and grabbed her waist, picked her up, and jumped onto the deck.
This series of actions caused Enid to scream.
On the deck, Milo put Enid down, helped her into the boat with one hand and made sure she was seated, then turned to look at the old boatman, and without saying a word put another black cloth bag over his head.
Seeing that the two men were so sensible, the boatman didn't say anything more and started rowing the boat.
……
“I’m starting to regret it.” Enid sat in the cabin, gripping Milo’s hand tightly.
“It’s your own fault for not going home,” Milo replied through the bag.
“The association used to be very vigilant, but it definitely didn’t have to be like this…” Enid muttered to herself.
It was clear that having her vision obscured by the black cloth bag made her feel very uneasy.
Milo seemed thoughtful:
"Something must have happened during that time."
