Chapter 434 Home
Chapter 434 Going Home
"Don't listen to his nonsense!" Huang Li suddenly became agitated, pointing at the two security guards: "The reason something like this happens in the mall is because these security guards are useless!"
"We're useless?" The security guard surnamed Li's temper flared up as he gripped the sign he had ripped from the deliveryman's neck. "How did that old man in your shop die two months ago? He closed the shop after work, and the next day his body was found inside! He was kneeling when he died. What kind of wicked thing did he do to die so suspiciously?"
Huang Li tried to stop the security guard from continuing, but the guard got more and more excited: "A month ago, one of your employees didn't go home late at night. He was drunk and went to sing by the river at midnight. As a result, his body was washed downstream two kilometers away."
"Their deaths were accidental! Shut up!" Huang Li shouted shrilly, seemingly worried that Han Fei might be frightened.
"Is it a surprise?" The security guard surnamed Li grabbed Huang Li's wrist. "Just a week ago, the new male employee you hired committed suicide. He was perfectly healthy when he came, without a single problem. Why would he suddenly commit suicide at home that night? And when he died, he was kneeling at his own door, as if he were welcoming a god?"
"Let go! Let go of me!"
"Your store's employees are almost all dead, and you're still here scamming new recruits?" The security guard surnamed Li clenched his fists tighter and tighter as he stared at Huang Li's face: "If you're not scared at all, why don't you stay and watch the store at night?"
"I……"
"I heard that when you were on night shift, you often talked to yourself and pleaded desperately in places where no one was around. Oh, right! Last night I saw you standing in front of that shrine for a full half hour without moving! Do you have something unclean on you now?" The security guard surnamed Li became more and more outrageous. When he got close to Huang Li, Han Fei stepped in front of her.
"New guy, you're on the night shift here, you see us all the time, is it really necessary to make things so tense?"
"You two specifically target disabled people to scam them. Even if you get the money, can you spend it with a clear conscience?" Han Fei grabbed the wrist of the security guard surnamed Li. "Besides, that thing is called a shrine, not a shrine box."
"It's good to have a sense of justice, but don't meddle in other people's business. Be careful you don't get sold out and end up helping others count the money." The security guard surnamed Li found that he couldn't break free from Han Fei's grasp. He said several harsh words in the hope that Han Fei would back down.
“Li Daxing, I’m calling Zhu Wei right now. He shouldn’t have gone far. You two are just causing trouble if you stay here! I strongly suspect that the things that went missing from the mall before were stolen by you two!” Huang Li also took out her phone. The security guard surnamed Li had really scared her. She was already afraid to work the night shift, and now she was even more frightened.
"Acting like a pure white lotus! No wonder Zhu Wei is always targeting us, it turns out it's because you've been tattling on us behind our backs every day!" Another security guard also came over, trying to snatch Huang Li's phone. Just as the situation was about to get out of control, a heavy thud was heard from the top floor of the mall.
"Oh!"
The mall was unusually quiet at night, and everyone heard the strange noise.
The group stopped making a move and turned to look deeper into the mall.
In the pitch-black shopping mall, only the green emergency light at the safety exit was lit. The pale green light seemed like the underworld, making it look even more eerie.
Han Fei and the security guard released their hands at the same time. The two security guards looked at each other, and the one called Li Daxing took out a security baton from his waist.
"The sounds from upstairs?"
"Third floor or fourth floor? The women's clothing floor?"
Li Daxing became a little nervous. He glared at the deliveryman and Han Fei: "This isn't over between us! You two just stand here and wait!"
The two security guards forcibly took the deliveryman's badge and then ran together into the depths of the mall.
The deliveryman was chasing after him, and in the process, he accidentally dropped his phone, causing the screen to go black.
"Give it back to me!"
The security guards ignored the deliverymen and hurried upstairs. They were night shift security guards, and if there were any problems at the mall at night, their wages would be deducted by their superiors.
The fact that they snatched the deliveryman's badge shows that these two people weren't going to let the deliveryman off the hook, but rather planned to settle the score later.
"Did you hear that voice just now?" Huang Li hid next to Han Fei, her face pale. "Just now... a lot of what Li Daxing said was made up. Don't take it to heart."
"Sister Huang, don't worry. My mother is waiting for surgery at the hospital. I need this money, so I will not resign no matter what." Han Fei smiled, but the smile was forced and painful. What was most heartbreaking was his eyes, which contained too many complex emotions.
Seeing Han Fei's expression, Huang Li opened her mouth slightly, as if she wanted to say something, but in the end she didn't say anything.
"Could I borrow your phone for a moment? I want to call this delivery driver's father, tell him the truth, and prevent him from being scammed by Li Daxing." As Han Fei spoke, his eyes were fixed on the delivery driver, giving the impression of a person with a strong sense of justice.
"Okay." Huang Li unlocked her phone without much thought and handed it to Han Fei.
Holding Huang Li's phone, Han Fei walked over to the deliveryman. With his back to Huang Li, he quickly swiped the phone, looking through some messages and call logs.
Recently, Huang Li has been frequently sending messages to three people: one is referred to as "Boss," another as "Zhu Wei," and the third as "Worse than a pig or a dog."
The person whose contact name was "worse than pigs and dogs" kept sending messages to Huang Li, but Huang Li never replied.
"Inferior to Pigs and Dogs" seems to be Huang Li's ex-husband. Many of the messages he sent to Huang Li were threatening, starting with wanting to see the child and later threatening to kill Huang Li's whole family.
"Wang Ping'an, do you still remember your home phone number?" Han Fei asked the deliveryman gently, his fingers still rapidly swiping Huang Li's phone screen as he asked.
The person labeled as the boss also chatted a lot with Huang Li, but most of the messages were sent by Huang Li. During her night shift, she discovered many chilling things. She told the boss that if things continued like this, she might go crazy.
"Ping An, don't worry, think back slowly. We know you're not wrong." Han Fei's voice seemed to carry a warmth that made people feel comfortable.
His gaze drifted downwards, and Han Fei quickly scanned the chat history. When he came across the chat messages from three days ago, his pupils twitched slightly.
Three days ago, Huang Li sent a message to the boss, saying that at midnight the clock started to move backward, the black cloth covering the shrine fell off, and someone was knocking on the door inside the shrine.
The boss's reply was very simple, just two words—"Run!"
After some time, Huang Li sent another message to her boss, saying that the sound had disappeared, but she didn't dare to go back.
The boss asked her to stand guard at the store entrance and reassured her that a new person would be coming to work the night shift soon, and everything would be fine.
Judging from the information they provided, they definitely knew there was something wrong with the shrine.
As the oriole approached, Han Fei opened his phone's call screen and leaned close to the deliveryman: "Don't be nervous, we're not bad people."
After asking around for a while, the deliveryman managed to utter a few numbers intermittently, and Han Fei tried dialing them as well.
In fact, he had already memorized the phone number and address on the sign when the security guard pulled it down. Everything he did just now was to look up the messages Huang Li sent to the boss.
"Uncle, I'm sorry to call you at this time. Wang Ping'an is in some trouble. Someone is trying to scam him." After the call connected, Han Fei told the other party the whole story.
Wang Ping'an's father on the other end of the phone was also awake; he was waiting for his son to come home, even though his son was almost thirty years old.
Han Fei took several photos of the food container and delivery box, and then sent them to Wang Ping'an's father: "If they want to claim compensation, show them this evidence. Ping'an did nothing wrong; they are the ones who are wrong."
"Thank you, thank you!"
"Uncle, could you come and pick up Ping An? He seems terrified and a bit disoriented." Han Fei was still at work, and more importantly, he didn't dare to walk alone at night before he understood the ins and outs of this world.
"Okay, I'll be right there. You're near the department store, right?"
"Wang Ping'an and I are waiting for you at Exit C of the mall." Han Fei hung up the phone. He was about to go clean the floor when the system's voice appeared in his mind again.
"Attention player number 0000! You have triggered the shrine random quest - Go Home."
"Going home: The road home is sometimes short, but sometimes it becomes very long, so long that it takes a lifetime to walk it."
"Mission requirements: Escort Wang Ping'an home."
Han Fei hadn't paid much attention at first, but when he looked at the mission information a second time, he vaguely felt that something was wrong.
"Wang Ping'an's father is coming to pick him up. I just need to wait for him here. Why did an escort mission suddenly appear?"
"Could it be that Wang Ping'an's father will have an accident on his way here?"
Han Fei narrowed his eyes and carefully read the mission description. The road home was sometimes short and sometimes long, so long that a lifetime was not enough to go back.
“The definition of home should not be a house. For Wang Ping’an, home is where his father is! If his father is gone, then he will never have a home for the rest of his life.”
Having figured out the key point, Han Fei decided to set off, but he was still a little worried about Huang Li. Strange things often happened in the store at night, and now Huang Li had gotten into a dispute with the security guard.
"If the shrine's owner were here, what choice would he make?"
After hesitating for a moment, Han Fei asked Wang Ping'an, "Is your father's health not very good?"
The deliveryman clutched his phone, now blacked out, his expression one of utter distress, on the verge of tears. He kept nodding, his mouth agape, but he couldn't utter a single clear word.
"Just as I thought."
With lives at stake, Han Fei wasted no more time. He returned Huang Li's phone to her, saying, "Sister Huang, I'm going to deliver the message to Ping An. We'll be right back."
Before Huang Li could speak, Han Fei picked up the lunchbox and helped Wang Ping'an walk out.
“Ride your bike, let’s go home, just along the road your dad always leads you.” Han Fei has worked with autistic children and knows that parents often go to great lengths to help them become independent. Just to remember the way home, they may have to practice walking it countless times.
Holding the lunchbox, Han Fei sat on the back of the electric scooter, letting Wang Ping'an take him home.
The night was heavy, and as soon as they stepped out of the mall, they felt the temperature drop continuously, as if some taboo had been triggered.
