Chapter 342 Mother and Two Daughters
Chapter 342 Mother and Two Daughters
Han Fei silently added Zhuang Ren's photo to his inventory. He had only wanted to try it out, but he didn't expect to be able to collect it successfully on his own.
"Attention player number 0000: You have successfully obtained the E-grade cursed artifact fragment - Sacrifice."
"Sacrifice (E-rank cursed artifact fragment): This cursed artifact is composed of multiple fragments, scattered throughout the Dead Building, and is related to the E-rank hidden quest, Death Curse. At your current level, it is recommended not to touch it, otherwise you will most likely become one of the sacrifices."
It's possible that Han Fei's level was too low, because the system gave him a warning. The system had also given him a warning before when he challenged the manager mission before level 10.
However, warnings are warnings, and things that have already been put into the inventory are not going to be returned.
Given Han Fei's character, even if he were to destroy it, he would not leave it to the butterfly.
"Fragment of an E-grade cursed item..."
The most terrifying cursed item Han Fei had ever seen before was the blood-red paper doll in the convenience store. This cursed object, which had developed its own consciousness, was only an F-level cursed object at its peak.
"The name 'human sacrifice' doesn't sound like anything good. Let's keep it for now. Maybe after we collect more information, we'll be able to figure out what this cursed object really is. We'll decide then whether to destroy it or keep it."
Han Fei gently opened the bedroom door and looked outside. The living room was quite ordinary, clean and tidy, with nothing unusual about it.
Once outside, Han Fei looked around.
A black and white flyer lay on the dining table, seemingly appealing to the building's residents for donations to repair something. It also mentioned weekly evening events that all adults were required to attend.
"It looks like someone wrote something here." Next to the flyer were paper and pen, and an open calendar with a date circled on it—April 4th.
"It's this time again. What does this time mean to a butterfly?"
While the woman and the middle-aged man were still searching inside, Han Fei quietly walked to the door. He opened the old security door, intending to check the room number, but as soon as he opened the door, he heard footsteps and conversations coming from the corridor.
"Mom, can the deceased really come back?"
"Don't doubt, don't waver. Haven't the family in 4244 already reunited? Your dad will definitely come back too."
The people having the conversation seem to be a mother and daughter.
“Sister, lately, after I fall asleep at night, I always hear footsteps in the house in my half-awake state. The ritual seems to have really worked. It must be Father lingering around.” Another woman’s voice came from inside. She seemed to be quite young, probably just turned 18.
"Even if there were footsteps, how can you be sure it was your father? We couldn't see him..."
"Even if you can't see it, do you think you can't even tell your dad?" The mother was clearly a little angry. After asking her eldest daughter, she started muttering something in a cryptic tone: "Your dad will be back soon. Don't make him angry. He used to love you the most."
“It’s because he loved me the most that I wanted to be sure that he was unique in my heart. I miss him terribly, but he’s dead. If he comes back, will it still be him?” The eldest daughter was very aggrieved. This didn’t seem to be the first time she had argued with her mother.
As the three drew closer to the door, Han Fei quickly waved to the woman and the middle-aged man, and together they ran toward the bedroom where the wardrobe was stored.
The door lock was turned, and the security door opened just as the bedroom door closed. The middle-aged man in blood-stained clothes was the last to run in.
"What are you standing there for at the door? Come inside!" the mother urged, but the youngest daughter, who was walking in front, remained unmoved and only spoke after a few seconds.
"Mom, I think I just saw a red shadow enter the room you usually don't let us in."
"Red Shadow?"
"Hmm, it feels like I'm wearing a blood-stained coat. When my dad was in the car accident, wasn't he covered in blood and dragged a long way by a truck? Could it really be him coming back?!" The youngest daughter stared at the bedroom door, a little afraid to go inside. She didn't know why, even though she was certain that it was her father, she still felt fear and unease.
"Should we go into the bedroom and take a look?" the eldest daughter suggested.
“No, it’s not time yet. Going in now will ruin everything.” The mother shook her head and refused. She closed the security door and went inside. “We can just live as usual. Don’t make a fuss just because your father is coming back. Don’t disturb him.”
It sounds easy, but knowing that there are ghosts in the house and still wanting things to be the same as before is really difficult.
The two daughters outwardly agreed, but once inside the house, they would still glance at the bedroom door, intentionally or unintentionally.
"Go back to your room and go to sleep. The ceremony said that when your father first came back, he would only appear when we were resting and asleep. He will slowly show himself after we get used to him. Then you will know whether he has returned or not." The mother held a wooden statue in her arms. It looked very broken, but she treated it like a treasure.
"I've been busy all night and I'm quite tired, so I'll go back to sleep first." The eldest daughter went back to her room to sleep, the youngest daughter went to take a shower, and the woman secretly entered the little girl's room. When she came out, the idol was no longer in her hand.
After the youngest daughter finished her bath and went back to bed, the mother seemed to go to rest as well. The living room lights were turned off, and there was no sound outside; it was deathly silent.
"Shall we get out of here quickly? This family seems a bit off," the middle-aged man in the blood-stained clothes muttered under his breath.
"Wait a little longer." Han Fei hadn't expected to enter the room where Zhuang Ren's family was. He wanted to find out about their condition.
Even though it was Zhuang Ren's family members who died, they thought it was Zhuang Ren who died, and they even held a soul-summoning ceremony in the deep world.
What alarmed Han Fei even more was the photograph of Zhuang Ren, which was referred to as a living sacrifice. Han Fei felt that there must be some connection between them.
About half an hour later, the door to one of the bedrooms was pushed open, and a very light footstep slowly approached the bedroom where Han Fei was.
Just as everyone's hearts were beginning to race, the living room lights were suddenly turned on.
"Zhuang Qing, I knew it was you! What are you trying to do in your father's room?" Her mother's voice suddenly rang out from the corner of the living room. She hadn't gone back to her own room but had instead been guarding the living room: "You put those tape marks on the wardrobe, didn't you? And you stole the key to the Soul Lock, didn't you?"
The mother's voice carried a hint of anger: "I really don't understand. Your father loved you so much when he was alive, so why are you so resistant to his coming back and keep causing trouble!"
"I..." The eldest daughter bit her lip, holding a kitchen knife in her hand, seemingly preparing to destroy the wardrobe.
"Tell me why!" the mother said, struggling to suppress her anger.
"Mom, don't believe what those people in the building are saying. I feel there's something wrong with this soul-summoning ritual!" The eldest daughter finally revealed her secret.
"has a problem?"
“I keep having the same dream that we keep repeating the soul-summoning ritual. We’ve actually experienced similar days many times, but we’ve never succeeded in summoning the soul.” Zhuang Qing looked at her mother, hesitated for a long time, and then spoke.
"Just because of your dream? You won't let your father come back and reunite with us?" The mother was somewhat disappointed in Zhuang Qing: "Do you know what family is? Even if there is only a one percent chance, I will do everything I can to bring him back, because he is your father and my lover."
