Chapter 4261 Possession by an Evil Spirit (Forty-One)
“Even if, according to your logic, big cities are man-eating beasts, and you want to prevent people from being eaten by these beasts, what you should do is pull out the beast’s teeth—you should go to those office buildings and kill those company bosses who create homeless people, instead of deceiving yourself by using those crazy doctrines to trap your already poor fellow countrymen in primitive tribes without modern facilities.”
"If you could really make the whole town rich, and provide everyone with the best quality food and the warmest shelter, it would be hundreds of times better than those homeless people. Perhaps then I could partially agree with your point that 'big cities are indeed not good enough'."
"But you're a complete idiot. You couldn't save the circus, you couldn't restore the town's reputation, and you couldn't attract more tourists or help people earn more money."
"Assuming you truly have the ability to accomplish all of this, enabling people to earn money and live the most prosperous lives right at their doorsteps, you wouldn't need to engage in these cult doctrines. They would stay and build their hometowns instead of going to big cities to work."
"Unfortunately, you don't have that talent. That's why you can only resort to cults, deception and brainwashing, and even violence and coercion, to force people to stay here and live a so-called peaceful life."
“Deep down you know that without such methods, no one will genuinely love or respect you. All their adulation is fake and based on coercion. It is because you feel that this is not good enough that you want to build your ideal world in your mind.”
“You changed the spirit of all of them, making everyone genuinely like you. But you also know that it's all still fake; the more they seem to genuinely regard you as a god, the emptier you feel inside. This day-to-day adoration not only failed to satisfy you, but also made you increasingly unable to bear that kind of life. You wanted something real, even if only a part of it, which is why you came here to become a member of parliament.”
"You finally surrendered, to the big cities, to the upper classes. You became the fangs in the mouths of beasts. But was the process really as humiliating as you imagined? Weren't those feelings of shame and lamentation in the dead of night just fabrications to numb yourself?"
"Admit it, Berg. You've been just like the people you claim to hate the most from the very beginning. You're not kind-hearted or compassionate towards the weak. You always indulge your desires and do all sorts of bad things first, and then try to cover it all up with a fig leaf, repeatedly making excuses for yourself until you believe them yourself."
"The principles you think are so logical can't fool anyone. That's why you've accomplished nothing in the real world and can't stand life in your ideal world. After going around in circles, you've ultimately made yourself a joke."
"I've said enough!!"
Marlos, or rather old Berg, let out a roar. Black light began to emanate from his eyes, and he vaguely transformed into the appearance of another person.
Kent still didn't fire; he cautiously took a few steps back. Sure enough, a black aura rushed towards him. He lunged onto the sofa to dodge the attack, but was immediately dragged up by the black aura and slammed onto the floor.
"Ugh!" Kent let out a painful groan, but he didn't give up the fight. He rolled over and hid behind the sofa, firing a shot at where old Berg was.
boom!
The bullet hit him, but only knocked him back a step. Blood flowed from his body, but it did nothing to hinder the evil spirit's actions. It unleashed a wisp of black energy, grabbed Kent, and gripped his neck, its face contorted with rage, as if it wanted to strangle him to death.
Kent struggled desperately, but his ordinary strength was no match for the power of the evil spirit.
Just as he was beginning to feel the lack of oxygen, he suddenly felt a sharp pain in his heart, and something was crawling up his chest and onto his arm. The thing was very fast, and then a dark shadow darted out from his arm and bit into the black mist.
"Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!"
The evil spirit suddenly let out a scream. The black energy receded, and Kent fell to the ground. He fired two more shots, knocking the evil spirit down, then pounced on it, pinned it to the ground, and began punching it repeatedly.
boom!boom!boom!boom!
He landed several punches in one go, and black smoke billowed from the other man's mouth and nose again. He let out an extremely sharp scream, which stunned Kent so much that he couldn't move for a moment, and his whole body went numb.
He staggered and fell to the side, feeling no strength in his limbs, unable even to crawl, and his head throbbed with pain as if it were splitting open. The evil spirit, meanwhile, rose from the ground, picked up its gun, and prepared to shoot Kent.
In a daze, Kent saw countless souls clinging to old Berg's body: some strangling with their arms, others biting with their teeth. They were constantly devouring the black mist.
boom!
The instant the bullet reached the muzzle, a tiny infant's soul bit the evil spirit's finger, causing him to jerk in pain. The bullet missed, but still struck Kent's thigh, making him scream.
But it seemed that the pain stimulated him, completely triggering the adrenaline that his body never normally uses. He sprang up from the ground, pounced on the evil spirit again, snatched the gun from its hand, and smashed it against the skull.
Logically, someone of his size should be able to smash someone's head in just a few blows with all his might. But firstly, his posture didn't allow him to exert much force, and secondly, Kent wasn't in good shape. He did smash the head a few times, causing the opponent to bleed profusely, but it wasn't enough to deliver the final blow.
He strained to open his eyes and saw that the souls were still desperately devouring the black mist. He stopped smashing and simply grabbed the evil spirit's body, preventing it from escaping so that the souls could devour it even faster.
But the evil spirits weren't to be trifled with. Realizing his body was a constraint, he screamed again and burst out of it. While the spirits continued to haunt him, Kent was no longer a threat, as he couldn't touch them.
Kent was both anxious and angry, because he had discovered that the souls he had brought out seemed to be no match for the evil spirit. The evil spirit had cultivated dark magic for countless years; after regaining its spiritual form, the black mist had begun to devour the souls, and the soul power was making it even stronger.
Kent took a deep breath. Suddenly, a thought struck him: since this guy practiced dark magic, there must be dark magic items in his house in Westville. He remembered the layout of Aunt Kane's house; old Burger's tool shed was in his garage. And when he came in, he saw a car parked in the yard outside, proving that the garage of this house might have also been converted into a tool shed.
With that thought in mind, Kent didn't delay any longer and dragged his injured leg towards the garage. The adrenaline helped him a lot; he even completely forgot the pain and practically flew into the garage.
But the garage didn't contain what he had imagined. Kent immediately realized: the other party was a senator, and his house might have many guests; keeping his research on dark magic in the garage was too risky. If it wasn't a garage, then it was probably the cellar.
Earlier, when a councilor invited him into the house, he went inside and looked around. He remembered that the houses in this community had basements, with the entrance in the backyard. So, he stumbled out of the garage back door and rushed to the cellar door.
The evil spirit seemed to realize what he was about to do and screamed as it chased after him. Kent used his last bit of strength to jump down into the cellar, and sure enough, he found a large pile of evil dark magic items inside.
He didn't know what they were for, but he grabbed them all and started throwing them at the evil spirit above him. The rule of mutual repulsion between dark magic items didn't seem to have changed; when the things Kent threw hit the evil spirit, it actually let out a scream. The evil spirit hurriedly retreated.
Finding it useful, Kent yelled, "If you dare come in, I'll smash you to death with these things!"
The evil spirit seemed genuinely afraid of his actions, repeatedly considering coming down but refusing to. Kent knew hiding there was pointless, so he shouted above his head, "Pull him away and let me out!"
The ghosts heard him and clung tightly to the evil spirits, pulling him away slightly. Kent seized the opportunity, using one leg to climb onto the ladder, grabbing the edge of the cellar with both arms, and with a sudden pull-up, successfully flipped himself out.
He took the items out of his pocket and began throwing them at the evil spirit one by one. However, the outside environment was too open, and the evil spirit was very fast. He dodged many of them, but even when they fell to the ground, he dared not touch them. This restricted his movement, and he even turned around and ran towards the front yard.
Kent threw away most of his belongings except for a bone knife. He figured that if he could cut down the evil spirit, he could definitely injure it, so he dragged his injured leg and chased after it.
During the chase, Kent saw a figure flash by outside the yard, and his heart sank to the bottom: Could it be the police?
Although he'd taken care of the sheriff, the local patrol officers might not be so sure. He fired several shots; the neighbors have probably already called the police.
The evil spirit ran back into the house. Kent approached with his bone knife, but at that moment, the evil spirit suddenly changed its attack, letting out a loud roar, throwing off all the souls in its body, and lunging straight at Kent's face.
He wanted to possess him! Kent realized it immediately. So he swung the bone knife around randomly. The evil spirit failed to enter his body, but it knocked him to the ground. Kent, who landed on the back of his head, immediately felt intense dizziness, and the bone knife fell from his hand.
Just then, he felt a sense of rejection, as if his body wanted to kick him out. Kent gritted his teeth, determined not to leave. He convulsed as he reached for the bone knife beside him, and with trembling hands, he raised it and plunged it into his chest.
Both the evil spirit and Kent let out a scream. The evil spirit seemed to have not expected Kent to be so ruthless; not only did it fail to squeeze out initially, but it now wanted to take him down with it. It quickly ran out of Kent's body.
But as soon as he went out, the spirits swarmed back. Kent, despite the intense dizziness and his injuries, managed to get up, determined to stab them with the bone knife.
The evil spirit was immune to physical attacks, but this bone knife was a dark magic item; a single stab would cripple or kill. Left with no other option, he picked up Marlos's body again—with a physical body, he could insulate himself from some of the damage.
With a soft thud, the bone knife pierced Marlos's body. The evil spirit let out a scream, but didn't die. Kent, however, had exhausted all his strength and collapsed completely.
He lay on the ground, staring at the ceiling, panting. Too much blood was flowing from his thighs and chest, and his vision was beginning to blur. He hadn't expected this evil spirit to be so formidable: guns, souls, and dark magic tools—yet it still couldn't kill him.
The evil spirit was clearly pleased with itself. Malos's face turned exceptionally grim. He said, "In the end, I'm the winner. I was right!"
Kent's pupils had already dilated. In his last moments of vision, he saw a blood-red glint appear behind Marlos.
The harpoon raised by that clumsy yet simple girl was entwined with the soul of another woman. The flying angel Satan, just as she had in life, leaped high with the harpoon, then soared down and pierced the heart of the evil spirit.
"Pfft!"
