Chapter 4247 Possession by an Evil Spirit (Twenty-Seven)

The agents had already learned about the clown actor from Bruce. And after Bingle provided this crucial information, everything connected.

The Mormon leadership isn't entirely stupid. While they preach morality, their hearts are set on business. They operate not out of genuine faith in God, but to exploit their followers. And of course, they need to find a safe place to store the spoils they've acquired.

So, over the years, like ants carrying grains of sand, they gradually transferred their assets to large banks in other cities, paving the way for their future. The clown actor, Berg's father—Old Berg—was also involved in this asset transfer scheme. In other words, he was the owner of a portion of the safe deposit boxes. Therefore, as Berg's descendant, Linda had inheritance rights.

But that's not the main point. The main point is the safe deposit box that the agents and hunters came into contact with in the bank. It was previously speculated that this was an evil spirit's conspiracy. By making the person who came into contact with the box simultaneously meet two conditions, the evil spirit placed the box in the bank's safe deposit box.

And this box is the very same scare box that clowns use in their stage performances. This can't be a coincidence.

If the evil spirit existed before the tragedy in the town, and if someone had placed a potentially dangerous scare box in a bank safe deposit box long before the tragedy, then the identity of this already present evil spirit is obvious. Old Berger is definitely involved.

Having pieced together the clues, the detective didn't waste any more time. He said to Bing, "You don't have anything to do here, so why don't you come with me? You're more familiar with the town and can give me directions."

"But I..."

“Your mother is mentally unstable right now. Even if there were no evil spirits watching over her, she might not come with me. Since you say that you two have a deep relationship, you should at least help me persuade her.”

“Alright,” Bing agreed immediately. “But I can’t appear in the spirit world as a spirit, or the evil spirit will find me immediately. He hates me. You’d better find me a hiding place.”

"He probably doesn't hate you the most right now. Let's go."

After saying that, the agent ignored Bing's wishes and lifted him up. Bing yelled and bared his teeth, but he didn't seem to be a very powerful evil spirit, so he couldn't do anything except struggle.

The agent carried Bingle upwards, and they soon reached the surface. Bruce was stunned when he saw Bingle holding a child.

Upon seeing Bing's face, he immediately recognized him and said, "You're Bing, the one who grilled fish in the cave, right?"

"Yes, it's me. But... have you already fallen into the evil spirit's trap?"

"What do you mean?"

"Although the news of the town's tragedy has been suppressed, the town used to be quite popular, so it's inevitable that some people will still come here. The evil spirit has set some traps in the real world. As long as you come into contact with related items, you will be trapped in the memories of that time. The more you come into contact with them, the more your mind will move towards the spiritual world. If you get injured in the real world, you will soon be tricked into the spiritual world and never be able to get out."

Bruce recalled. He had indeed seen some unusual people among the townspeople before, some who looked like law enforcement officers, and some who were on foot. They were probably all brought in in this way.

“What might be a trap for ordinary people isn’t for us,” the agent said. “Alright, we still have one teammate we haven’t found yet. We need to take advantage of the evil spirit’s absence and explore this world properly.”

In fact, Peter had already begun exploring. Because he had regained some of his spider-sense, which allowed him to avoid most dangers, he simply started feeling around from house to house, and he actually found some clues.

Peter stood in a house, holding a Yellow Pages telephone directory—the kind of phone book used by the townspeople. At the top of the directory was a number that had been described many times before, addressed to "Dear Reverend," with the name "Familo"; below that was another name, "Derby," but this person didn't have a phone.

Peter immediately recalled the memory he had when he first encountered the Book of Mormon. There were two men walking through what looked like an underground tunnel when he saw a magic circle and was pushed from behind, falling onto it.

Could it be these two priests?
He certainly hadn't forgotten. When he first came in, a man who called himself Pastor Famillo had given him glass after glass of water. He already knew this man wasn't a good person. But if the two of them were the same two people from his memory, then they must know something.

While Peter was pondering, Bruce and the agent, along with Bing, followed the trail and found Peter. After exchanging information, the three of them all looked at Bing.

“Okay, I lied about part of it,” Bing said. “You know, the townspeople were chronically poisoned, so they couldn’t have died on the same day. The ordinary believers couldn’t see a doctor because the sect preached that they weren’t allowed to, and there were no doctors in town, so they couldn’t leave and wouldn’t get treatment for any symptoms they had. But it was different for the higher-ups.”

“Most of them had been missionaries, traveling all over the country. They didn’t believe in what they preached at all, and they were more afraid of death than anyone else. In fact, they would leave town every year for a medical check-up. When they felt unwell, they would find out very quickly and then prepare to leave town for treatment. Of course, I couldn’t let them leave.”

"For some reason, after I became a ghost, I also gained the ability to control bodies. But my own body was too weak, so I controlled my grandfather's body, which is Berg's corpse, and killed all the high-ranking officials who wanted to leave the town. These two must have escaped."

“However…” Bing frowned in confusion. “I’m pretty sure no one could have left the town. There’s no one alive left in town except my mother. Where did those two go?”

Peter had already found paper and a pen nearby. He began to sketch, and then drew a rough pattern, handing it to Bing and saying, "Do you know what this is?"

Bing looked at it for a while, then shook his head and said, "I don't know, what kind of picture is this?"

Bruce and the agent both glanced at it, and then the agent said, "This looks like some kind of magic circle."

“The paranormal events must be real,” Peter said. “There must be some mystical force at play in this series of events. I’ve already seen Familo in town, which proves he might be dead. But if what I remember is that Familo was pushed into a magic circle, then did Derby, who pushed him in, gain something from this act?”

"You mean he sacrificed Familo and then escaped through a magic circle? He's that powerful?"

"Ah!" Binger suddenly exclaimed, "I remember now."

"what?"

“I remember seeing a similar pattern somewhere before. My grandfather had a black box that was filled with circus props. But it wasn’t his; it was left to him by his father. I remember looking through the box once and seeing a pattern that looked like it in a photograph.”

"This is old Berg's stuff again, isn't it?"

Bing nodded and said, "If I'm not mistaken, yes. You say this is a magic circle, what is a magic circle?"

No one answered him; they all fell into their own thoughts. The agents had determined that old Berg was likely some kind of dark sorcerer, causing trouble in the town after his death. The formation of the spiritual world was definitely related to him.

“We still have to go back to your home,” Bruce said, “the place where two generations of Berg lived, and there will definitely be some traces left there.”

So they headed toward Aunt Kane's house. In the mental world, the house wasn't old at all; it was ridiculously new, spotless, like a toy house.

They searched the house, but found nothing. Everything in the house looked like it had just come off a factory assembly line, without a trace of use. Or perhaps everything in the entire spiritual world was like that. This was probably the heaven that those cult members envisioned.

“I have a basement,” Bing said. “Let’s go to the backyard and see if there’s an entrance there.”

They arrived at the backyard, but found no entrance. The entire backyard stretched as far as the eye could see, with nothing but a lawn.

“He must have hidden the entrance,” Bing said. “Let me think… the tool shed, let’s go check the tool shed.”

So they went to the tool shed. As soon as they got there, they realized something was wrong. This tool shed was more like the real world, and when they got closer, they found that it was semi-transparent, just like the state when those spiritual entities were about to leave this world.

“This could be the gateway to the real world,” Peter speculated. “For that evil spirit to enter the real world, it would either have to go through an unclaimed body or be in a designated location.”

"Wait a minute." The agent found something in the corner of the room—a small doll, exactly the same as the one that popped out of the scare box they encountered in the bank safe.

Then he remembered that when he was rummaging through the tool shed in the real world, he found a box without a doll, and at the time he thought it was unfinished. Now it seems that the doll must have been removed.

"He can possess dolls too?" The agent picked up the doll with some doubt, examined it, and squeezed it, discovering something inside. So, he disassembled the doll from behind and found a finger bone inside.

“It’s an adult’s,” the agent said, “and it’s been around for a while. It might be old Berg’s bones.”

He rummaged around inside again, took out all the cotton, turned the whole cover over, and then saw a pattern on the inside of the doll's skin that was somewhat similar to the magic circle from before.

“Just as I suspected,” the agent said. “This guy is the real son of Satan. He has been studying black magic and can move directly in the real world by possessing dolls. He can use the dolls’ bodies to hurt others and steal their bodies. Perhaps he used this method to possess Aunt Kane back in New York, which ultimately led to the failure of Berg’s escape plan and caused all the tragedy.”
