Chapter 2192 2.190 The Fate-Cutting Competition
As mentioned earlier, Tokei-ji Temple, whose abbesses have been from prominent families for generations, has always been known for upholding women's rights. During the Edo period, women lacked freedom of marriage; forced marriages often did not allow for divorce, and women suffered abuse from their husbands and mothers-in-law. If they came to Tokei-ji, they would receive protection and assistance in filing for divorce. If the divorce could not be finalized immediately, they could remain at the temple for three years of spiritual practice, during which time the divorce would be automatically recognized—a practice known as "Enkichi-ji Law."
According to 0606 Lolita, Tokeiji Temple is all about this "Enkichiji Method".
The only change is that "staying in the temple for three years and then leaving" has been changed to "staying in the temple for half a day and then leaving." Here, "half a day" refers to half a peaceful day (a broken day). Converted to story days (fragment days), this amounts to a full 30 days. The gameplay is simple: it's divided into attacking and defending alliances. If the attacking alliance can bring a specific character out of Tokei-ji Temple within 30 story days, they can activate the "Enkichi-ji Law," gaining all the defending alliance's character cards at once. Conversely, if they fail to bring a character out of Tokei-ji Temple within 30 story days, they can also activate the "Enkichi-ji Law," gaining all the attacking alliance's character cards at once.
The female ninjas in the temple originally belonged to a "third alliance" independent of the attacking and defending sides. They could be hired or bribed by either side, or even betray them in the heat of battle, creating unexpected effects in the plot. Moreover, as the key to determining victory, the "Enkiri Temple Method," with its inherent sudden death rule, made all sorts of unorthodox tactics the only way to achieve a decisive victory. In the tug-of-war, one must constantly be wary of sudden attacks, which will undoubtedly make participating in the Enkiri competition both painful and exhilarating, and something that will keep players coming back for more.
The term "severing ties" refers not only to romantic relationships but also to various life circumstances. In the context of players, it means relinquishing ownership of the cards.
That's right. In the end, it's still the winner-takes-all reaper rule.
However, it has been completely transformed by the invasion of the Purple Coral Spirit. How much of the winner-takes-all player competition remains, and how much has been distorted and altered, is currently unknown.
The moment you step through the temple gate, the courtyard, laid out like a chessboard, suddenly begins to expand in all directions. All sorts of buildings spring up like mushrooms after rain as the space becomes increasingly folded. However, upon closer inspection, you'll find that these buildings are dilapidated, most of them on the verge of collapse.
"My God..." Empress Wang, the Demon Queen of Huanglongtian, was shocked by the enormous ruins: "It looks like an endless battlefield."
“That’s how it is.” The long-dormant memories of the Shinano female ninja, Sanada Yui, began to resurface: “The Enkiri Competition is about the final winner of the endless battlefield.”
"How should we compare?" Dana Barrett, chief executive of Dream Paris, went straight to the point.
“Look,” said Sanada Yuhi, a female ninja from Shinano, pointing to a collapsed wooden house. “This is the ‘Blue Woman’s House’.”
Aonobo: Also known as Aonobo, this is a legendary Japanese yokai (supernatural being), ranking 45th in the Hyakki Yagyō (Night Parade of One Hundred Demons). It is depicted as a woman with black teeth and disheveled hair, often seen haunting abandoned houses in the Kyoto area, preying on humans and posing a significant danger. Legend says Aonobo was originally a lady-in-waiting in the imperial court. Before entering the palace, she promised her fiancé that they would marry after she left. After leaving, she discovered her fiancé's betrayal and that he had married another woman. She remained in her old house, waiting devotedly, and gradually transformed into a yokai. Whenever someone visits, she dresses in front of the mirror; if it is not her fiancé, she kills him.
As she spoke, Shinano female ninja Sanada Yubi pointed to another dilapidated house not far away: "This is a zashiki-warashi."
Zashiki-warashi: A household spirit in Japanese folklore from Iwate Prefecture, often appearing as a girl aged 3 to 6, dressed in a red kimono, and considered a guardian deity and god of fortune for the family. Its prototype is said to be the soul of a child who died young due to poverty and illness, residing in the human world because of its unwavering desire to bring happiness to others. In folk tales, it also appears as an old woman. Zashiki-warashi helps family members by gathering herbs, possessing the ability to enhance family fortune and warn of fires. It often manifests by increasing the number of children playing with it or creating harmless footsteps. If offended or imprisoned by humans, the Zashiki-warashi will leave on its own, causing the family's decline. Some greedy families have attempted to forcibly control its actions through the creation of protective barriers by priests, but ultimately could not prevent the spirit's disappearance. Its existence is directly related to the family's prosperity; it usually chooses to temporarily reside in impoverished families, performing its blessing before moving on to other families in need.
As the memories of the Shinano female ninja Sanada Yuhi continue to surface, more and more yokai are recognized.
Jiaming: A monster that causes houses to shake and make "thump thump thump thump" and "clatter clatter" sounds. It is often depicted as a short demon that uses tools to hit doors and windows or shake beams and pillars. It does not cause physical harm but makes people feel uneasy.
Under the Skylight: A monster dwelling in the skylight of an old house, resembling a crow (with black swan wings, an eel tail, and the strength of an ox), spying on the house from the shadows, deciding whether to protect or harm people based on their judgment of their good or evil.
Paper House Demon: A phantom formed from the fusion of discarded paper and vengeful spirits, capable of manipulating paper to create illusions, such as paper cranes chasing people or walls turning into paper barriers, symbolizing the backlash of forgotten knowledge. Nurarihyon: Although not exclusively residing in houses, it often sneaks into other people's homes, treating them as its own, drinking tea and relaxing, and is even mistaken for the owner; it is the leader of the yokai.
Hiyoribou: A yokai that appears on sunny days, resembling a doll. Hanging it under the eaves is believed to bring sunshine, and it later evolved into the "Sunny Doll".
Abandoned House: Originating from Ainu legends, it is depicted as a hairy old man who is good at imitating human actions, has a cruel nature, and often appears in empty winter houses.
Upside-down pillars are building pillars that are installed upside down. These pillars are believed to make strange noises at night, causing fires or family decline, and are therefore considered ominous. If left unattended for a long time, an upside-down pillar may change its appearance, such as showing a person's crying face, or even a "pillar monster" may appear.
Without exception, these monsters hid in the collapsed buildings.
The question is, what does this have to do with the cutting competition?
"A Japanese-style predatory city," Wu Chen aptly put it.
“Master is right.” Reminded by Wu Chen, Shinano female ninja Sanada Yubi remembered many things: “We need to kill or subdue a ‘house spirit’ and then use her parts to repair this dilapidated house…”
"Ah..." After hearing what she said, Captain Yuko, the courtesan of Gobancho, suddenly realized: "Cyber monster."
“Yes, Captain.” Shinano female ninja Sanada Yui nodded quickly: “All the yokai have undergone cybernetic modification. They can perfectly fit into the dilapidated houses they occupy, and after being repaired, they become mobile houses, which allows them to fight against their opponents. They also devour their resources and parts to continuously grow stronger.”
“The inspiration must have come from Mortal City.” Wu Chen’s heart stirred: “So, this is another meaning of ‘Yuanqie’.”
"Sever all ties." Empress Wang, the Demon Queen of Huanglongtian, had already thought of this: "Cut off the marriage."
"Yes." Wu Chen smiled and said, "Clean up the house first, then deal with the people."
"Master, which dilapidated house should we occupy?" Captain Yuko, the courtesan of Gobancho, wanted Wu Chen to make the decision.
With the help of his female companion's "eyes and ears," Wu Chen used his fleeting True Sight to lock onto his target: "That one."
Looking around, it was just a simple wooden hut, standing alone in the weeds, looking utterly unremarkable. However, since it was Wu Chen's chosen target, Captain Yuko, the courtesan of Gobancho, did not hesitate and led her team straight towards it.
The moment I plunged into the weeds, the folded space expanded once more.
Row houses, machiya, tatami rooms, shrines, samurai residences, palaces, mansions, and castle towers kept appearing one after another. In the blink of an eye, a castle city appeared as if by magic!
