Chapter 1378: Chaos and the Framed Assassin
Chapter 1378: Chaos and the Framed Assassin
The reason for this urgency is that while Jack was still on the road, Finch finally unlocked the contents of the emails in the folder using Powell's wife's birthday.
The emails were filled with violent death threats, starting about two months after Powell lost his job and continuing until last week.
"I can understand that Reese went in to look for Powell, but what were you doing in there, Finch?" Jack asked puzzledly while standing outside the hotel.
Unfortunately, Finch lowered his voice to sound somewhat innocent. "I don't know, Ta. Uh, Jack, Reese asked me to follow the city councilor closely and stay alert and take action at any time."
Jack almost laughed out loud. "Action? If there's a gunshot, what does he expect you to do? Take the bullet for Mr. Alderman?"
"That's why I'm confused, but Mr. Reese said I'll find a way when the time comes."
Although the timing was not very appropriate, Jack still couldn't help laughing. He could imagine how speechless Finch was when he heard these words.
"Can you give me some live view, Finch? It shouldn't be difficult for you to connect your or Reese's phone camera to my phone?"
The noise reduction and sound pickup function of the headphones used by the two people in the banquet hall was a little too good, and Jack could only barely hear someone loudly inviting the guests to take their seats on the stage.
Reese's voice was emotionless and reached Jack's ears. "Unless you want to study the dishes tonight, there's no need to share my information. I finally got into the kitchen and wandered around for a long time. Now I plan to go backstage in the lobby to look for Powell."
Finch replied quietly, "Sorry, Jack, I'm using my phone to remotely control my computer. There seems to be something wrong with the threatening email Powell sent to the city council members. It was flagged by my system during the verification process."
Jack was about to continue asking what the question was when he felt a fragrant breeze coming from behind him. He turned around and saw two beautiful ladies in high-end evening gowns smiling as they passed by him. They were Zoe and her female boss, Moghe.
When Zoe passed by Jack, she winked at him playfully and waved her phone. Jack could only mouth "Be careful" in response.
"Thank you, dear Reddies, for coming to this party tonight. I'm Peter Matheson." In the live video transmitted through Zoe's mobile phone, a tall and thin middle-aged white man was giving a warm-up speech.
Zoe was still explaining to Jack in a low voice, "The person speaking is Peter Matheson, the campaign manager of Delancey City Councilman and also his business partner."
The campaign manager on the stage was obviously a good talker. After he used two jokes in succession to liven up the atmosphere, he ceremoniously invited today's protagonist, City Councilman Mike Delancey.
In Jack's earphones, Finch was still mumbling, "The IP address is correct, but the TTL value is totally wrong, #¥%# cannot pass the verification"
"What exactly do you want to say, Finch?" Reese and Jack were equally confused.
"Those anonymous emails were not sent from Powell's wireless router, nor were they even sent from the laptop. The content was copied to the laptop no more than three days ago."
Reese interrupted Finch's long and difficult explanation impatiently, "I want to catch him more than repair his computer."
At this time, warm applause broke out. City Councilman Mike DeLancy strode onto the podium amid cheers and waved to the crowd below. "Thank you, thank you all for coming."
"I found him, he has a gun!" Reese's voice suddenly made the atmosphere in this small circle tense. "Mr. Reese, I think Powell's laptop has been hacked." Before Finch finished speaking, he and Jack heard the sound of someone being knocked down and a cry of pain in their headphones at the same time.
"Mr. Reese?" Finch asked doubtfully.
"Is it resolved?" Zoe asked at the same time as Jack was on a video call. She couldn't hear the conversation between Jack and Finch and Reese, but her instinct as a former soldier and police officer made her realize that something was wrong.
At the same time, Reese's voice sounded very surprised, "Color cannon gun? Jack, Finch, I think Powell has been framed."
Jack's ominous premonition suddenly reached its peak, "Zoe, can you think of a way to stop the party from continuing?"
However, before he could finish his words, a gunshot was heard, and Zoe's movement holding the phone visibly trembled.
The video was a little blurry, but Jack could still clearly see that the city councilor who was standing on the stage and preparing to start speaking suddenly fell backwards to the ground, holding his left chest.
Screams rang out, and the hotel banquet hall was in chaos almost instantly. Jack heard someone shouting, "There he is! There!"
After shaking for a while, the picture was finally aimed at the terrace on the second floor, and then the searchlight that was originally used to create an atmosphere was turned over.
Powell stood there with a confused look on his face. The sharp-eyed Jack even noticed a dark shadow flash by at the end of the corridor. It seemed to be Reese.
"Reese, have you seen the murderer?" Jack asked hurriedly.
"Yes, he's on the other side of the terrace, hiding in a corner with the darkest light, and I'm chasing him." Reese answered breathlessly and seemed to be banging on the door.
Jack said quickly, "No, your most important task now is to find a way to take Powell away. Since he is a scapegoat, the other party may ask him to commit suicide on the spot."
"Mr. Reese, Jack is right. Can you find a way to take Powell away?"
"Damn it! What do you think I am, Superman?" Reese stopped chasing the real murderer, paused where he was, looked back at Powell who was still stupidly illuminated by the searchlight, and couldn't help but complain in a low voice.
"I'll get a car and meet you at the back door of the hotel. Finch, you leave first while there's chaos." Jack knew that he should have a way. If he couldn't do it, Reese would definitely have said it directly.
Reese grumbled through gritted teeth as he took off his long windbreaker to use as a makeshift cover, "I'll try my best. I hope this idiot can cooperate."
-
Sirens were blaring. The NYPD already had two police cars maintaining traffic order at a nearby intersection. Within five minutes of the gunshots being heard in the hotel, two groups of patrol officers arrived at the scene, and more police cars were on the way.
In the alley behind the hotel, Danny looked at Jack with a dull expression, "My dad asked me to come to the scene because he was worried, but you want to use my car to take away the murderer who just assassinated the city councilor?"
"He was framed." Jack said as he and Reese worked together to get the unconscious Powell into the back seat of a plainclothes police car.
