Chapter 1227 The Best Bait

After dinner, Jack sent his female boss away and returned to the living room. He took out two bottles of St. Petersburg Vodka from the wine cabinet and let the guests pour themselves.

The composition of the people in the living room at this time was a bit complicated, but fortunately they were not outsiders and they could still have a good chat after closing the door.

Most of the people in the room are former agents from different camps. Frank and Marvin are former CIA agents. Although Victoria claims to be a former MI6 killer, she is actually an action agent.

Ivan, a former KGB agent, is now the military attaché at the Embassy of the Russian Federation.

After the reorganization of the KGB, part of it was called FSB, but its First Directorate became independent and became the current Russian Foreign Intelligence Service, abbreviated as SVR.

Although Ivan did not reveal his identity, everyone knew that his secondary identity as a military attaché was probably that of an SVR agent.

Anna is a former agent who defected from the FSB, and Jack is an agent of the FBI, the largest counterintelligence agency in the United States. Although he has almost never been involved in counterintelligence work, he has done counterterrorism work before and has even served as a consultant for the CIA more than once.

Now all we need is Mossad to complete the set of Cold War cards.

Of course, there’s Beckett and Castle at the end, a NYPD detective who’s been temporarily suspended (on administrative leave?) and a writer.

Now these people who have nothing to do with each other have gathered together because of some coincidences, which makes Jack marvel at the magic of this world.

St. Petersburg Vodka is not as strong as most people imagine. Its alcohol content is only 40 degrees, which is similar to Scotch whisky and bourbon.

Jack prepared a few simple side dishes, including peanuts, smashed cucumbers and pickled edamame, as well as a large plate of crispy pig ears, a Spanish delicacy he often made. Everyone still sat around the dining table as they did before, as if they were having a "Cold War" tea party.

Frank was the first to speak up and break the awkward silence, his expression showing a bit of annoyance, "I think we made a mistake. We shouldn't have let Danning off so easily today."

Jack shook his head. This was something he had struggled with before. "He and Bracken are both cooperating and balancing each other. If we just kill him, Bracken can still mobilize CIA resources through Cynthia.

In fact, killing any one of these three people alone would mean endless troubles in the future."

At this point in the investigation, the truth has basically come to light, but we have almost nothing that can be called evidence.

It has to be said that killing to silence someone was a brilliant move. The information Beckett had might be able to link Bracken to the kidnapping and extortion gang members of the past. The money order number saved by detectives John LaGrande and Gary McAllister pointed to the bank account of the former assistant prosecutor at the time.

But that was all. With this information, it would be impossible for Beckett to even find a prosecutor willing to help her prosecute.

In other words, the information that Commissioner Montgomery had kept to threaten Bracken and protect Beckett was not enough to send him to prison.

This is actually easy to understand. As a politician, Bracken kept killing people to silence them not because he was afraid of going to jail, but simply because he was concerned about his reputation or political life.

As for going to jail, sorry, in this country, the law only applies to ordinary people. No matter if you take drugs, whore prostitutes, sleep with your sister-in-law or niece, as long as you have a good father, even if you have been convicted, you are still truly "invincible". It doesn't matter if you are too old or your father is dead. As long as you have a friend who is the president, even if everyone in the country knows that you once sent 2300 innocent minors to prison in order to accept bribes from private prisons, you can still get amnesty.

At this moment, in this room, no one cares whether Bracken could become the next vice president of this country, and there is no point in exposing dirty laundry.

What Beckett wants is to avenge his mother by killing Bracken, but this cannot solve the troubles Frank and Marvin are facing.

However, it was the CIA that was hunting Frank and Marvin. The CIA did not need a reason to kill, they only needed to assign tasks.

Therefore, unless they can find a way to box out Robert Bracken and Alexander Denning, preferably with Cynthia Wilkes, all three of them together, and give a suitable reason afterwards.

Otherwise, if they just kill one or two of them, they will be put in a passive position. After all, things have developed to the point where it is no longer just a matter of the three parties involved.

It would be easy for Frank and Marvin to carry out the assassination. Even for Beckett, with his identity as a NYPD detective, it is not impossible for him to find an opportunity to get close to Bracken.

But as Jack said, there is little point in seeking temporary satisfaction, as the problem cannot be completely solved and it may even bring trouble and danger to your relatives and friends around you.

Frank has a girlfriend who was innocently implicated by him, and Beckett also has Cassel who has always been by her side. These are their weaknesses.

The drinking atmosphere became increasingly depressing. Jack saw this and felt worried. He suggested, "How about we find a way to tie up Bracken and use that to lure out Denning and Cynthia?"

Everyone cast doubtful looks at him. Victoria frowned and thought for a moment, "Are you sure they will really show up, instead of just sending assassins and agents to kill us and Bracken?"

Jack rubbed his forehead and thought to himself that he was an idiot. In the original drama, it was indeed the old agents who kidnapped Bracken and used this to lure out Denning and Cynthia, but the original purpose was just to exchange hostages.

At that time, Frank's girlfriend Sarah Ross accidentally fell into the hands of the CIA, and kidnapping Bracken was a risky move he had to take out of desperation.

But now the plot has completely changed. Sarah Rose and everyone else were sent to Los Angeles by Jack for protection. Even if they kidnapped Bracken, Denning and Cynthia were unlikely to show up for him.

The relationship between the two parties is at best a cooperative one. Bracken is just a politician. Not to mention that he has not yet become the vice president, even if he becomes the vice president, it is not worth Denning to put himself in danger.

After all, politicians can always be bought with money, and if they lose their lives, they really lose everything.

So why not just send a hostage over? As Jack's thoughts wandered, his malicious gaze subconsciously fell on a certain writer.

Frank's biological son and Beckett's boyfriend, if he falls into the hands of the other party, he is simply a perfect bait.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" Castle held a wine glass in one hand and hugged Beckett with the other, feeling uncomfortable when being stared at by Jack.
