The short man sat in the interrogation chair, looking around with a mixture of curiosity and bewilderment.

Chen Shu and a police officer from the on-duty public security crackdown team sat on the interrogation platform, while a judicial mediator from Binhe Street stationed at the police station sat alone in a corner of the interrogation room.

Chen Shu took out a pack of Liqun cigarettes from his pocket, pulled one out, and handed it to the policeman next to him who was about to turn on his computer: "Brother Liu, have one. Thank you for your help tonight, waking you up so late."

Brother Liu, whose real name is Liu Zhongwu, is 41 years old and works in the 2nd team of the Criminal Investigation Division of Zhongshan Police Station. When Chen Shu contacted him by phone, he had already gone back to his dormitory to rest.

Police officers on duty don't necessarily have to be in full uniform in the police station office or duty hall. If it gets late at night, they can go back to their own dormitory to rest, as long as they can answer calls from the duty station on their mobile phones.

Liu Zhongwu stopped what he was doing, took the cigarette, put it in his mouth, and leaned over to let Chen Shu light it. He took a few puffs and let out a satisfied sigh: "It's alright, I don't have anything to do on duty anyway, it's good to do something."

Chen Shu took out another cigarette and tossed it to the judicial mediator sitting in the corner: "Lin Hui, thank you for your hard work." Lin Hui stood up, caught the cigarette, smiled, waved, and sat down again.

Lin Hui, a judicial mediator stationed at the Zhongshan Police Station in Binhe Subdistrict, is not under the jurisdiction of the police station and usually works in the mediation room behind the duty hall to mediate disputes. Because the short man being tried is a minor, his legal guardian needs to be present. If the legal guardian cannot be present, the police usually ask a mediator to come in his place.

Chen Shu noticed that the short man sitting in the center of the room followed Liu Zhongwu and Lin Hui's cigarette butts a few times, even lingering for quite a while. Seeing this, he took out another cigarette, lit it, handed it to Zhu Chaoran standing to the side, and gestured with his chin toward the short man's seat.
