Chapter 575 The Dust Settles (Part 2)

The Third Army Corps is a direct branch of the military.

However, the Third Legion can also be described as the most complex legion in terms of its forces. Various forces intersect, including aristocratic families, newly emerging nobles, and commoners. In short, all sides are combined to form a strange balance.

The Third Legion Special Forces, to which the Zongting belongs, is a direct branch of the military and is completely neutral, generally not involved in matters such as power interactions and the distribution of benefits.

In fact, they are not loyal to any one person, but are directly under the military headquarters. Even the marshal cannot directly issue orders to them; every mission requires the approval of the Internal Military Council.

The Inner Army Council comprised the seven marshals and their followers, as well as representatives from various factions. They all represented the core of the empire's loyalty, monitoring and balancing each other to protect the empire's safety and interests to the greatest extent possible.

Therefore, although Zhou Yuanjing forcibly incorporated this defense line directly under the military, no one could say that he was fighting for territory out of personal motives; it was merely an action in accordance with the war situation. If the military really needed to negotiate with him, it wouldn't be Zong Ting, as he doesn't belong to this line.

Logically speaking, from the perspective of the imperial court, it should not and need not get involved in this complicated situation, as it would be harmful to him.

However, he deeply felt that the crisis on this front was deeply buried, and the people behind it had been planning for a long time. The lines that had been drawn up could probably circle the capital several times.

Recalling the secret document he had obtained by chance from Angel, the young man was secretly alarmed by the extent to which certain dark forces were infiltrating the empire.

Zong Ting was not a great figure. Although he came from a prominent family and followed a path of rapid advancement, he was actually always alone. He had achieved his current status entirely through his own abilities, and his family had never provided him with any support.

His past is vividly remembered, but his future remains uncertain. He knows that with those blood relatives, he can never forge ahead without fear like most of his contemporaries. Those people will not rest until they have devoured him whole, until they have dragged him down into that filthy mire.

Zongting knew that he was unwilling, which is why his journey had been so difficult.

He knew all along that this world was filthy, a mire beneath the surface of prosperity, a quagmire from which one could never escape, no matter how clean one washed, always feeling covered in blood. Only on the battlefield could he find a sliver of peace for his soul.

He loved this land, loved the empire that nurtured him, loved the people of this land, and therefore would never allow those filthy things to destroy and ruin it...

If those people can't do it, then he will. Zongting has long been determined to give everything, even his life.

Huan Xian's affair ignited a deeper alarm within him: in their struggle for power, the various factions at the top would stop at nothing. Their methods were far more despicable and ruthless than he had imagined; everyone had become a pawn in their game or a bargaining chip to be sacrificed at any moment.

Now that the matter seems to have been resolved and the crisis averted, he knows that the dark forces are still deeply rooted and buried, and no one can completely eradicate them.

Therefore, things could not be allowed to continue like this. Zongting knew that he alone could not shake that deeply rotten root, but someone else could.

That is Zhou Yuanjing, the former Imperial Marshal and now Commander Zhou.

We must meet again.

The young officer turned his gaze to Zhou Xiuwen, who was talking to Jiang Hui, while the other man remained completely unaware.

--------------

As it turns out, the world doesn't stop turning just because anyone pauses. After the first round of treatment, Jiang Hui's external injuries have mostly healed; at least outwardly, she looks much better. However, she has suffered a severe blow to her vitality and will likely need to recuperate for a considerable period.

Of course, that's a story for later. The next day, Jiang Hui received an injection of a temporary dormant drug, which typically induces a dormant state and allows the body to recover.

In the end, Jiang Hui slept for three whole days.

For the next three days, she was transferred to a military base in a less damaged deep-water area. She didn't regain consciousness until Zhou Xiuwen came to visit her on the fourth day.

However, this time she was in much better condition. All the braces and splints had been removed, and she could lie normally in her hospital bed without feeling any tightness, pain, or difficulty breathing.

In a moment of clarity, Jiang Hui could feel that all the organs and blood vessels in her body had returned to a relatively good initial state, although their functions were slightly damaged and she was considerably weaker. This was probably a severe depletion of vital energy, and she needed to recuperate properly.

Zhou Xiuwen was overjoyed to see her regain consciousness. He wasn't free every day; he could only visit his injured friend every few days. Heaven knows how worried he was each time he came, only to see someone unconscious.

He even invited the medical staff in charge of Zhou Yuanjing to come and check on him.

The other party said that Jiang Hui was fine, it was just in normal hibernation, and with proper care, it wouldn't have any lasting effects.

Huan Xian, on the other hand, had a really serious problem. Advanced medical resources alone might not be enough, so he was brought back to the starship for treatment.

Fortunately, Jiang Hui finally woke up. If he had continued sleeping, Zhou Xiuwen would probably have had to take him back to his own starship to treat him.

"You're finally awake. You've had a long sleep." Jiang Hui opened her eyes and saw Zhou Xiuwen's delighted face.

When the other person saw that she was about to sit up, they quickly helped her adjust the bed position.

Jiang Hui rubbed her forehead, took the medicine from the medical staff, and said, "This medicine is really powerful; I feel like I'm about to fall asleep." She still has a bit of a headache.

"If you don't wake up soon, Weixi Island will be almost completely repaired and back to normal operation," Zhou Xiuwen said, shaking his head.

With the advanced technology of interstellar speed, city construction has never been a problem, and three days is enough to complete the initial reconstruction.

Although they endured a tragedy that claimed countless lives, life must go on. It is precisely because they love this homeland that they hope to return to normalcy as soon as possible, carrying with them the loss of their compatriots—

Before Jiang Hui could say anything, a group of therapists rushed over to check her and take her measurements as soon as they realized she was awake. After a while, the two of them were finally able to talk for a bit.

As usual, Zhou Xiuwen briefly told her what had happened during the days she was unconscious. The students of Class Two had already been sent back by Zhou Yuanjing, along with the other students who had not fully awakened and had come on study tours or teaching missions. The survivors also had their own destinations, all arranged by the local government.

Finally, those who were injured and could not be temporarily placed, like Jiang Hui, were all moved to the military base here to recuperate.

If his recovery goes well, barring any unforeseen circumstances, Jiang Hui should be able to leave Atlantis and return to Planet 732 in a few days.
