Chapter 566 The Thin Line of Life and Death

The swamp alligator snapping turtle is a subspecies of wild turtles and a native species. While they exhibit distinct turtle-like features, they are far more ferocious than ordinary turtles.

It is said that their ancestors came from swamps and possess the common attributes of swamp creatures, being fierce, warlike, and highly aggressive.

Jiang Hui's perception of turtles was still based on the common turtles found on Earth. She had a preconceived notion that turtles were slow and inefficient, after all, everyone had heard the story of the tortoise and the hare. However, her impression of turtles was completely shattered today; it turned out that not all turtles in the world were the same.

For example, when this turtle becomes agile, it hardly resembles a four-legged reptile. Using its shell as a base, the massive shell becomes the pivot point for movement, driving its head and neck to attack. Ordinary creatures would have no chance against even a fraction of its bite force. Its limbs are large, covered with protective spikes, yet its overall coordinated limb movements are exceptionally agile, making it well-suited for hunting prey.

Jiang Hui's vehicle, Wally, was much taller and more coordinated and easier to move than this one, yet it had no advantage against this bulky star beast, retreating step by step and almost getting hit several times.

She dared not leave its front, nor dared to attack recklessly. Because with its offensive-defensive stance, attacking would be an opening, while not attacking would mean certain death. There was no more effective way to evade than dodging, especially since her WALL-E was such a fragile machine.

Jiang Hui desperately dodged the alligator snapping turtle's attacks, while everyone in the cabin became dizzy from her constant flipping movements.

She could even hear the sound of them bumping into the barrier wall, though it was also possible that her own head was ringing from the fall, accompanied by various unsettling mechanical noises.

Honestly, WALL-E is so unstable. Jiang Hui is really afraid that it will fall apart and shatter on its own while fighting, without even needing the alligator snapping turtle to bite it.

"What are we going to do? Are we just going to wait here to die? Can anyone think of a solution?" the crowd said anxiously, looking at the corner of the control room window that blocked their view on the other side.

"What method? That thing outside must be at least an A-level star beast. Didn't you see it just now? Its mouthful of teeth could strangle us all in one bite."

"But isn't Jiang a Class S? Class A star beasts... there's always a way."

"Does she seem to have a solution?"

"Hey, watch your mouth. Are you blaming her? If she hadn't come to rescue us, she wouldn't have encountered this, or we would all be dead by now."

"I didn't say that, I just wanted to know if there was a way..."

"Stop arguing, we're all going to die, what's the point of arguing? We can't help, so let's all be quiet! At worst... at worst we can all die together, then we won't be alone."

Jiang Hui was truly helpless, because S-level mental power was completely different from A-level star beasts. She had the mental power threshold, but she was at a disadvantage in terms of both combat strength and attack/defense.

But she discovered something: this star beast was almost maxed out in both attack and defense. However, it seemed to have a fatal flaw, a problem common to most swamp creatures: Jiang Hui discovered that its eyesight was very poor, or rather, practically nonexistent.

How did Jiang Hui discover this? When she was standing firmly with her legs on the ground, the other turtle would attack her fiercely and relentlessly, always hitting her target accurately. However, when she made some jumping movements, lifting her legs off the ground—not even at a great speed, but just temporarily moving out of a certain area—the alligator snapping turtle would lose some of its detection abilities and begin to search briefly.

This might sound a bit abstract, and some might think that this creature is simply not good at capturing movement. But how do you explain that when she's on both feet, the other animal can often keep up with her pace? It can't be that it can only see below the legs…

In a way, that's true. Alligator snapping turtles have a very limited field of vision; they can't see anything, day or night. This is because their eyes are essentially useless; they've long since degenerated in the swampy environment and no longer need to see.

It's less about "seeing" and more about observing information transmitted through thermal images, reading the dynamics of biological thermal energy through a special organ in its head. However, this ability is limited to a certain range because its head has a limited range of motion; beyond that range, it can only use energy waves to assist in capturing prey.

So does that mean that when she leaves the range of this heat transfer, the other party will not be able to accurately lock onto her?

After thinking for a moment, Jiang Hui took advantage of the moment when the turtle wasn't paying attention and boldly flew directly onto its back.

"Sigh, it seems like it can't be seen anymore."

"What the hell is this thing? Does it have poor eyesight like ordinary turtles?"

"Oh my god, please, please don't find us, okay? We can stay on its back forever."

Of course, it's not that it can't see; WALL-E is still within its detection range. But this angle is an absolute blind spot. No matter how fierce the swamp alligator snapping turtle is, its structure is similar to most of its relatives. No matter how long its neck is stretched, it cannot go around its shell to bite something on its back.

Jiang Hui maneuvered the mecha to keep his body low to the ground. He accidentally touched a piece of armor spikes on its back, and the relatively sturdy body was immediately scratched, the destructive power of which was astonishing.

The alligator snapping turtle seemed a bit stunned, not expecting that its prey would be so audacious as to climb directly onto its back and "dominate" it.

Although the back is not a sensitive area for an alligator snapping turtle, such "provocation" is enough to enrage any creature, and it will immediately try to shake its back to throw off the foreign object behind it.

But could Jiang Hui really let it have its way? Having witnessed just how hard and thick its shell was, Jiang Hui had no intention of recklessly confronting it again like before. This thing was definitely not something she, piloting a D-class mecha, could face head-on; she needed to find another way to survive.

However, Jiang Hui still underestimated the power of the star beasts. A-level star beasts already possessed a certain level of intelligence. They were not the ordinary animals she had ever seen that could be measured by common sense. They had roamed the universe long before humans dominated it, and over thousands of years they had evolved various combat modes and were already able to cope with all sorts of different situations.

Just like now——

Jiang Hui finally realized what the purpose of all those spikes on the turtle's back was; they certainly weren't there to make it look good.

Ugh...it really hurts!
