Chapter 327 Dare not gamble
As it turns out, Jiang Hui's intuition was correct, or rather, she was quite lucky in a certain way.
At first, only about one in nine people were hit by falling debris. However, as the chaotic battle expanded, the ratio became 50/50, meaning that one out of every two people would be knocked unconscious by the falling building materials and debris and fall to the ground. The passageway was quickly filled with "corpses," which looked terrifying.
Seeing this, Jiang Hui and his companions felt no joy whatsoever, though they were somewhat relieved. Perhaps out of a sense of shared fate, or perhaps because they foresaw the danger they were about to face, they quickened their pace, soon surpassing half the distance and approaching two-thirds of the way.
But their path was too difficult to traverse, and the other side seemed even more dangerous at the moment. Many had fallen along the way, and some were even left in grave danger, but there were always one or two exceptions...
Using their superior physical abilities, they reached the top platform ahead of everyone else. They could even see the commotion above; the people above were unaffected by their fall, and those who hadn't yet had their turn, along with those who had squeezed in later, filled the large circle around the entrance to the passageway once again.
So many people...that's just right.
Those who felt they were about to touch the platform above were very excited, thinking they were about to be rescued.
But before that, they must first overcome another hurdle, which is also the most difficult hurdle in this seemingly simple passage—a huge, uneven crack blocking both sides.
The crack was bottomless, completely devoid of light. Perhaps due to the material, no light reflected off it, and no image was visible. Moreover, the walls on either side of the crack trembled violently with the increasingly intense shaking, opening and closing as if they were about to shut down at any moment.
If the space below isn't open, but rather a temporary gap created by a crevice, and someone falls in... and the gap is compressed by the force, that person would most likely die. So no matter what, you must never fall into that gap.
However, the height, angle, and even distance between the upper passage and the lower pedestrian passage were quite tricky. After several attempts, they found that they couldn't get through this obstacle on their own. With no other option, some of them set their sights on a group of pedestrians who were relatively close by.
They tried to call for help from the people in the other passageways, hoping they could lend a hand—ropes, telescopic batons, even arms that might not be effective…anything would do, as long as someone was willing to help, it meant they still had hope of getting up.
Unfortunately, they overestimated human nature. Perhaps they didn't hear it, or perhaps they did but, because it didn't concern them, no one turned their attention in their direction. Their cries for help were mingled with the noise, as faint as their flickering flames of life that could be extinguished at any moment in the wind.
His hopes were dashed, and the few people who followed him up, not understanding why, repeated their previous actions, only to be disappointed again, in a vicious cycle.
Jiang Hui also saw it; the faster runners had already reached the gap below the tectonic plate, but seemed unable to climb over. They were lying on the edge, waving frantically and shouting as if trying to get help, but it didn't seem to be going well.
For some reason, Jiang Hui had a feeling of 'I knew it'. It wasn't hindsight, but this was partly why she hadn't chosen the obviously easier route in the first place.
Choosing such a difficult path might seem like suicidal to outsiders. Jiang Hui herself had doubts and regrets about her decision, but she saw it clearly: given the distance and twisted angle between the other side of the gap and the exit passage, it was impossible for someone on the lower side to climb up by their own strength alone, unless someone above would help them.
But once she climbed up there, would the people there really be willing to help them? Or should we say that people who were busy running away were really willing to spend their precious time rescuing a group of strangers?
Moreover, the crack was clearly caused by external pressure on one side, resulting in a ground fissure. Judging from the force applied to the left and right sides and the tilt of the ground, the bottom was not completely cracked, and there should still be a relatively thick layer underneath.
In other words, the space beneath the gap is definitely not open. If you fall in, you'll only face an increasingly narrow space, eventually getting stuck at the junction of the two gaps at the bottom. If the walls on either side then move slightly... the person trapped at the bottom will either die or be seriously injured.
If they don't receive help, and are forced by circumstances to cross that gap, the process and outcome of falling down would be unimaginable.
Jiang Hui didn't dare to gamble at all.
It's hard to imagine that she made such a judgment after just a quick glance, and then resolutely chose the pedestrian passage that seemed bumpy and difficult to walk on, but had no obstacles ahead.
However, it seems that Heaven has no intention of letting this group of poor people go. What they feared most came to pass, and He continued to put them through trials.
Even Jiang Hui and Clarence, who were at the very front and whose journey was already more than three-quarters complete, widened their eyes slightly when they saw the scene on the other side, and a sense of panic welled up in their hearts.
As Clarence observed, the battleground shifted, moving towards the direction of their passage, and the edge of the battle gradually spread to the other side of the pedestrian passage and the upper exit passage.
Now, even Jiang Hui and his group are encountering flying "attack objects" one after another.
Moreover, it was being concentrated and sprayed towards this side at an extremely terrifying density, and the passageway above was probably also affected. Jiang Hui and the others didn't even need to look to know that the passageway above must be in complete chaos.
The group climbing at the other end were clearly the most affected. They had to dodge large chunks of building material flying everywhere and scattered weapon fragments to avoid being crushed by these random objects before they could find their way back to the escape route above. Moreover... the gap that had been preventing them from returning to the exit level had widened further.
It still split apart from the upper plate in a vertical and horizontal manner, and soon it split so wide that even the people above could not help the people below. No matter how much they cried for help, no one came to their aid... But there was always a glimmer of hope, wasn't there?
So everyone could only watch helplessly as their only chance of escape vanished before their eyes, and there was nothing they could do. There is probably nothing more powerless than this.
