Chapter 100: In the Woods
More than ten kilometers from the finish line, this was an area experiencing wind, rain, thunder, and lightning.

Because the wind was so strong, the rain was almost always falling against the current.

If Jiang Hui were here, she would find that the acidic smell of this place is almost so strong that it is unbelievably nauseating.

The acid rain, with its corrosive odor, mixed with the earthy smell in the air and an indescribable animalic acid, creating a bizarre and grotesque scene.

Suddenly, a large patch of lightning flashed across the sky, illuminating everything in the forest with crystal clarity.

If anyone were here, they would probably be terrified out of their wits by the sight of corpses strewn everywhere and the utter chaos.

To this day, in this not-so-small open forest, on the west side lies a huge "alien body," the highest point of which is more than ten people's height above the ground, and the whole thing has an unusual silvery luster.

Another flash of lightning and thunder, and as if a start button had been pressed, the tiny tendrils extending from the autonomous body—though they were smaller in comparison to the main body—suddenly sprang upwards.

With a slight tremor, the things piercing through its tentacles fell off with a rustling sound and crashed to the ground with a "thud." Some honey-colored, viscous liquid seemed to be stuck to its smooth surface, slowly sliding off as the tentacles trembled.

These unidentified objects fell and merged into the layers of their kind that were already piled up below. At first glance, they varied in size, and from the side, one could see the layers of downy hairs standing up on these strange objects, which looked particularly terrifying in the night light.

Looking further up along the tendrils, you'll see that the silver plating on the main body, which is clearly connected as one piece, has been torn apart by some sharp object. Some pieces have only had the shiny surface layer scraped off, while others have been directly pierced by some thin, tentacle-like objects that have fallen from some monster, damaging the internal structure and revealing its intricate internal structure.

Just then, a flash of lightning illuminated the front half of the enormous creature, revealing its pair of huge pincers clamping down on something, while it struggled desperately.

Finally, the pair of chelipeds, sharp enough to be clearly seen even in the darkness, snapped the creature in two with a "snap," and it fell to the ground, struggling for a moment before going still.

After the last enemy was eliminated, the enormous alien creature seemed to have exhausted all its strength, and its entire movement stopped. Its pincers slowly drooped, hanging limply at its sides, and the tentacles that it had been struggling to hold up also fell limply to the ground.

Even the once shiny and smooth silver-white plating seemed to have completely lost its luster and remained motionless.

The upper control cabin was badly damaged, and the mechanical patterns on the outer layer had lost their luster as the internal energy was depleted and the operator's vital functions continued to decline, making the whole thing look dull.

A massive fang pierced through the eye of this spider-like mech, passed through its head, and finally landed at the control connection point of the second limb.

The mech's control room was directly connected to the rear of the spider-shaped mech's head, where the eyes were positioned. This sudden movement damaged most of the control panel, forcing the people inside to rely on a temporary panel for final cleanup.

The enemy has been eliminated, but the remaining backup energy inside the mech has been exhausted, so the mech can no longer continue to operate.

As the mech came to a stop, the lives of those inside the control cabin also gradually came to an end.

Mays had already given up hope of a rescue from the school. Since he became embroiled in this desperate battle, he had sent distress signals to the observation center more than once, and although he wasn't far from there, there had been no response. Furthermore, he had used his mech and was fighting such a sizable horde of star beasts… Normally, even if the observation center couldn't intercept the signal, the destination should have noticed and sent someone to investigate by now. The fact that nothing was happening meant either the signal was being blocked by something, or something had gone wrong on the other side.

But he probably won't have the chance to find out any of this. Because to find out, he first needs to survive... but will he really survive?

The fang came from the leader of the ant-like star beasts, piercing straight through the control cabin, tearing through the entire control panel, and also traversing his right shoulder before penetrating the limbs connecting to the rear control panel, pinning him to the ground.

And to make matters worse, after a fierce battle, a mistake in handling the fang slightly raised it, causing him to be half-hanging above his seat.

This posture caused Mays' wound to bleed and tear incessantly. He had to raise one leg to the panel for leverage, while using the other leg to provide another support by keeping the toes of the control cabin horizontal.

It was only through amazing willpower and the support of its legs that it maintained its position and prevented its shoulders from being completely torn apart by the fangs.

In this situation, he would find it even more difficult to save himself or free himself from the control cabin. He wouldn't even be able to move his legs and hands freely. If these four points of support were to loosen even slightly, he might lose his balance, and the fang would completely pierce through him, bones and all.

He won't just die, he'll also suffer a horrible death.

He was somewhat satisfied with this heroic way of dying, but a miserable death was unnecessary.

Mays wanted to keep himself looking human as much as possible in his final moments so as not to frighten his family too much. He thought to himself with a touch of bittersweet humor.

Of course, he would prefer to live.

Although his career had been somewhat unsatisfactory in recent years and his life plans had been ruined, he did not give up on himself. Instead, he wanted to break free from this unjust predicament and take revenge on those who controlled his fate.

Unexpectedly, before he could recover from this low point, he was defeated by such a small assignment training session. Life is truly unpredictable.

Mays even regretted wasting nearly a year of his life, letting himself wallow in frustration. If he had just pulled himself together, he might have already escaped his predicament and taken revenge on those people. After all, the May family had only temporarily fallen into a slump, not been wiped out entirely.

It was only when Mays was on the verge of death that he truly understood what regret meant.

But it doesn't matter, he didn't die a bad death.

If he can hold off the group of star beasts, the children will at least have a chance to live, so their deaths won't be in vain.

Right now, he's afraid some clueless fool might come back to him. Because in the end, Mace could only vaguely confirm that the surrounding star beasts had been cleared away, but he couldn't completely confirm that it was safe.

What if they encounter ambushing star beasts on the way? Wouldn't his rescue have been in vain?
