Chapter 89 Attack in the Cave
Wu Xiaoxie shone his flashlight inside and found that the coffin was empty, with nothing inside. It was as if Lao Yang had vanished into thin air, leaving no trace.

Wu Xiaoxie stared at the white light shining into the coffin and suddenly felt a chill run down his spine.

He gritted his teeth and decided to climb back to the previous fork in the road. Maybe Lao Yang had gone to one of the other forks. He just needed to wait there, and Lao Yang would definitely come back.

Just as he was about to set off, the tooth-ache-inducing knocking sound suddenly rang out again in the space, clearer than before. Now it sounded like someone wearing wooden-soled shoes hopping back and forth on the stone floor, one knock after another. In the silent environment, Wu Xiaoxie's heart pounded with fear, and he had an impulse to turn around and run away without a second thought, but his reason stopped him.

Wu Xiaoxie took a deep breath, and was immediately choked by the damp, rotten, and musty smell. His nose stung from the strong odor.

He realized that this place was not a good place to stay for long. The air here was not fresh at all, and staying for too long might cause a respiratory infection, which would be terrible.

After calming himself down, Wu Xiaoxie tried hard to pinpoint the source of the sound with his ears, and then discovered that the sound was coming from the empty coffin.

Wu Xiaoxie: "!"

He turned his head and stared intently at the coffin, his feet involuntarily taking two steps back. It was as if some terrifying thing inside would suddenly jump out and greet him enthusiastically, and then, because he couldn't understand its tongue, he would anger that thing, and then be grabbed by the neck, ending his tragic life.

"No, no, no..." Wu Xiaoxie quickly shook his head to dispel his own imagination, held his breath, and slowly brought his face close to the gap in the coffin, tilting his head to look at the coffin lid.

He suspected that he hadn't looked carefully enough in his haste; such a thick coffin lid could still be used to hide a person or something if you squeezed in.

Just as he was concentrating intently, he suddenly felt something draped over his right shoulder. At the same time, the sound from the coffin disappeared. Wu Xiaoxie shuddered violently, his hair standing on end. He let out a howl and swung his knife backward.

His attack missed its mark, and before he could react, the flashlight in his other hand was struck on his wrist and slipped from his grasp, rolling away into complete darkness.

A surge of immense fear welled up within him. A gust of wind swept past him from behind, and Wu Xiaoxie's mind froze in terror. He could only dodge instinctively, but it was too late.

He felt a sharp pain in his back, screamed, and was sent flying, crashing straight into a tree root that was not yet fully keratinized. The root snapped with a crack, causing a chain reaction, followed by a weightless fall.

All of this happened so fast that Wu Xiaoxie didn't even have time to react before he was hit. By the time he came to his senses, he was already lying in the pit.

Wu Xiaoxie shook his dizzy head, and when he got up, he felt a sharp pain in his back. He coughed twice, and a metallic taste rose in his throat.

Oh no, that bastard is really ruthless; he's suffered internal injuries.

To avoid being attacked again and caught off guard, he quickly groped his way to the edge of the pit, hugged his knees and curled up tightly, slowing his breathing to avoid being looked over from above.
