Chapter 46 Traveling across mountains and rivers
Chapter 46 Traveling across mountains and rivers
"I guess so," the driver said warmly. "You're here for tourism, right? Where are you headed?"
"We want to go to Mount Taibai."
As Wu Xiaoxie spoke, he took the candy Zhang Wuxun handed him, tore open the packaging, and stuffed it into his mouth. He immediately grimaced from the sourness and almost jumped up on the spot.
Zhang Wuxun silently curved the corners of his mouth, "Anti-dizziness miracle candy."
Wu Xiaoxie's face was so sore it was contorted, but she still didn't vomit. She pressed her mouth against the window crack to let the wind blow through.
Upon hearing that they were going to Taibai Mountain, the driver quickly offered his services, saying, "You can't travel without a guide. It's easy to get lost in the winding mountain roads. Would you like me to take you for a while? I live in a village right next to the nature reserve. It's just over two hills away."
Wu Xiaoxie wanted to refuse upon hearing this.
Zhang Wuxun patted his arm and said to the driver with a smile, "Fellow villager, then we'll trouble you to lead the way."
Wu Xiaoxie disagreed a bit and leaned closer to Zhang Wuxun's ear, "Isn't that necessary? Lao Yang said he remembers the way."
Zhang Wuxun glanced at Lao Yang, who was looking out the window at the scenery, and lowered his voice, "How do you know he won't get lost and lead us astray? It's convenient to have someone who knows the way. Don't worry, I'll pay for it."
Wu Xiaoxie glared and muttered under his breath, "Is that what I meant? You've got too much money to burn?"
Zhang Wuxun smiled and placed a lemon candy in his hand. "That's right."
Wu Xiaoxie took a deep breath, "I don't like this taste."
"Then you can choose for yourself." Zhang Wuxun readily opened his palm.
Wu Xiaoxie grabbed the only two milk candies inside, and Zhang Wuxun threw the rest to Lao Yang, who had a bitter face.
The villager led the three to a small guesthouse in a rural area.
Zhang Wu went to tell the landlady what he wanted to eat later and asked her to prepare it and bring it up directly, for an extra fee.
Back upstairs, they saw Wu Xiaoxie and Lao Yang peering out of a slightly ajar window, whispering to each other in secret.
Seeing Zhang Wu coming up, Wu Xiaoxie quickly waved to him, "Muyu, come and see quickly."
"What's wrong?" Zhang Wuxun walked over.
Wu Xiaoxie pointed to the cars that had just stopped below and said, "Look at those cars, they have out-of-town license plates, and their models and colors are very similar to those parked outside the food stalls before."
Zhang Wuxun looked over and saw the person inside the car open the door and get out. He raised an eyebrow slightly and said, "It really is."
Old Yang looked flustered and stammered, "He, they followed, we followed me."
“I don’t think so.” Zhang Wuxun shook his head. “Don’t forget that their goal might be the same as ours—the ancient tomb.”
"Then, what should we do?" Lao Yang asked.
Wu Xiaoxie was also a little worried.
"It's alright." Zhang Wuxun patted Wu Xiaoxie's shoulder reassuringly. "We'll try not to go out and avoid running into them. They have a lot of people and are well-equipped. We'll just follow behind them and let them scout ahead for us."
Wu Xiaoxie and Lao Yang both broke into mischievous smiles.
After the meal, the three chatted for a few minutes before going to rest separately.
At three in the morning, Zhang Wuxun, who was lying in bed, suddenly opened his eyes, got out of bed silently, walked to the door, leaned his ear against the door and listened quietly for a while, and a short knife appeared in his palm.
The door lock made a very slight turning sound.
Zhang Wuxun took two steps back and waited quietly for the rat outside the door to walk right into his trap.
[Host, beware!]
The system suddenly issued a notification.
Sure enough it was him.
Zhang Wuxun curled his lips into a smile, a hint of murderous intent flashing in his eyes.
With a clatter, something fell to the ground, and the noise outside the door froze for a moment. Zhang Wuxun could imagine the other person leaning against the door, listening intently to what was happening inside.
A dozen seconds later, as if sensing danger, the rustling sounds outside the door resumed, and the deliberately light and quick footsteps moved away.
Zhang Wuxun's eyes narrowed, and he quickly pulled open the door, only to see a black figure flash past at the corner of the corridor.
Looking down at the ground, a specially made iron hook, about half a hand's length long, lay quietly on the ground by the door.
With a cold laugh, Zhang Wuxun squatted down, picked up the hook, went back into the room, closed the door, shut the latch, casually tossed the hook onto the table, turned around, went back to bed, lay down, and closed his eyes.
[System, my hearing seems to have improved considerably.]
[Assistive functions for night vision]
[Oh!] Zhang Wuxun chuckled, [You're so thoughtful.]
The system responded with a polite and elegant smile: "You're welcome."
The three of them got up early the next day.
Wu Xiaoxie nestled by the window, munching on a roujiamo (Chinese hamburger) while keeping an eye on the cars.
Lao Yang wandered around for a while and, seeing that there was no movement for the time being, said he was going back to catch up on his sleep.
After Zhang Wuxun finished washing up, he glanced at the table and noticed that the hook was gone.
He didn't make a fuss, but pretended not to know.
Around noon, the group finished their meal and left the farmhouse with their equipment.
Zhang Wuxun and the other two quickly checked out of the room and followed behind them after they had gone some distance.
They followed them until midnight before the group finally stopped, apparently to set up camp and rest.
Wu Xiaoxie collapsed to the ground, rubbing his legs with a sigh, "That was really exhausting, those guys can walk so fast."
Zhang Wuxun mocked him, "That won't do, little naive comrade. In our line of work, trekking through mountains and rivers is the norm. I told you before to take some time to exercise so you'd suffer less, but you wouldn't listen and were too lazy to move. Now you're suffering for it."
"Stop talking nonsense, you son of a bitch." Wu Xiaoxie gave a wry smile, leaned dejectedly against the tree trunk, and didn't want to move at all.
Zhang Wuxun tossed him a small packet of individually wrapped snacks to tide him over.
Then I took out three boxes of self-heating meals from my backpack (space), and tossed one to Lao Yang.
He poured water on himself and Wu Xiaoxie, then set them aside.
They were less than ten meters away from the group, so there was no way to start a fire. Fortunately, Zhang Wuxun had anticipated this situation and had prepared waterproof military boots and waterproof jackets for him and Wu Xiaoxie, so they could barely endure it.
Compared to them, Lao Yang was in a much worse situation. His clothes and shoes were soaked by the mist, and he couldn't make a fire to dry them. He was so cold that he huddled up in a ball.
Lao Yang cursed, "We can't go on like this, no, it won't work."
"How about we sneak over and listen to what they're saying? Just in case we can find some clues, right?"
Wu Xiaoxie thought he made sense.
After quickly finishing their meal, the three of them crept furtively toward their campfire.
Sneaking closer, Zhang Wuxun reached out and pulled Wu Xiaoxie, signaling him to crouch down. "This is enough. Getting any closer might reveal our position."
The mountains were quiet, and the people were speaking loudly, so their words were clearly audible.
To Wu Xiaoxie and his companion's surprise, there were actually two Cantonese speakers inside.
After listening to them chatter idly for a while, one of them, called Uncle Tai, said that it would be at least three more days of travel.
Old Yang muttered under his breath, frustrated, "If only I hadn't followed along, damn it."
Wu Xiaoxie quickly glared at him to shut him up.
