Chapter 165 The bloody storm

Zhang Wuxun and Fatty stood guard at the two exits from behind makeshift bunkers, guns at the ready, exuding a murderous aura.

The flashbang eventually burned out its last bit of life, and the surrounding black mist instantly enveloped it.

Only a few lanterns and a few flashlights lying on the ground nearby are still diligently doing their job of providing illumination.

In the dim light, they saw the human-faced birds flying down one after another, folding their wings and standing quietly on the volcanic rocks around the crack, like sculptures.

On that head that resembled a human face, two large, dark eyes stared unblinkingly at the three people in the crack. The white, skeletal face was expressionless, as if waiting for something.

The gunfire from those who had fled in the distance seemed to have stopped, which meant that most of the human-faced birds that had gone out to forage, except for a small number that had been killed, would return and attack Zhang Wuxun and his two companions.

In the silent darkness, the heartbeats of Zhang Wuxun and the other two seemed to be in unison.

Suddenly, a huge flapping sound came from the air, and the gusts of wind it created were much stronger than those of the human-faced birds before.

An indescribable stench wafted into the three men's noses on the wind; the smell of blood and decay mingled together, making them want to vomit.

With several loud thuds, heavy objects fell from the sky to the ground, smashing to pieces and becoming bloody and mangled.

With a gurgling sound, a round, unidentified object bounced a few times on the ground and rolled to a spot not far in front of Zhang Wuxun. Upon closer inspection, he realized that it was actually the head of Hua Heshang, one of Chen Pi Asi's subordinates.

Perhaps because it had been pecked at and beaten, the head was so blurry that its face was almost unrecognizable. If it weren't for the distinctive, bright bald spot on its head, Zhang Wuxun wouldn't have recognized its owner as Monk Hua.

Within the encirclement of the human-faced birds, there were three corpses missing limbs. One lay there with its neck twisted, and its face resembled Ye Cheng's. Another was badly mutilated, torn to pieces, and its head was missing. It was unclear whether it belonged to that old man Chen Pi Asi.

The three bodies lay there quietly, without a sound.

The fat man clearly recognized the three corpses as well. His teeth were clenched so tightly they were chattering, but he held the gun steadily without the slightest tremor.

"Wooden Fish." The fat man called out to Zhang Wuxun softly, his voice filled with relief, "It's been a worthwhile life for me to have met you and Tianzhen."

He paused for a moment after speaking, then added, "We should also include that amazing guy, Zhang Qiling, even though he always disappears without a trace."

Zhang Wuxun chuckled and said softly, "What nonsense are you talking about? We'll definitely get out of here alive."

The fat man laughed, "Alright, I believe you. Once we get out of here, I'll take you to Beijing to visit my property in Panjiayuan, so you two kids can broaden your horizons."

Thump, thump, several more corpses were thrown down; they were from Aning's men.

Zhang Wuxun glanced at it once and then looked away, keeping the gun aimed at the beak of a human-faced bird. He narrowed his eyes slightly and said, "Aren't you going to treat me to a meal, Fatty?"

The fat man grinned, "I'll personally cook for you two."

"Okay, it's a deal."

"It's a word."

Wu Xiaoxie sat on the ground, his view obstructed by the cover. He couldn't see what was happening outside, but he could feel the growing chill in the air. The words of the two men, Fatty and Fatty, intensified his ominous premonition. He couldn't help but speak up, "My blood might be useful to those human-faced birds. Sprinkle my blood at the exit."

Zhang Wuxun turned around and gave him a strange look. "What made you have such a terrible idea? You've already lost enough blood after being shot. Do you want Fatty and me to end up with a cold corpse that's been handed over to Wu Sansheng and Pan Zi?"

Wu Xiaoxie choked, then said dejectedly, "We should at least give it a try. What if it works? Then you two can have an easier time."

Zhang Wuxun chuckled, turned his head back, and stared at the three enormous creatures that were three or four times the size of the human-faced birds that were falling down. He replied to Wu Xiaoxie, "My genuine Qilin blood is useless against these scruffy birds, and your half-evolved blood is even more useless. Be good, stay put, and do your logistical work. Fatty and I will definitely get you out of here alive."

Wu Xiaoxie gave a low "oh," loaded a bullet into the magazine, placed it within easy reach of the two of them, and continued loading the next magazine.

His face betrayed his disappointment, and his heart was filled with a deep sense of powerlessness and frustration. Faced with such a dangerous situation, his teammates were fighting fiercely, while he was injured and unable to help at all.

But soon, he had no time for self-pity or lamenting the passing of spring.

The battle began with a piercing scream.

Led by three adult human-faced birds, the small human-faced birds cried out and then opened their large mouths, which were full of sharp teeth, from under their skulls. From these mouths crawled a creature that was sticky all over, had no skin, and had blue and purple blood vessels, resembling a premature monkey that had been deprived of oxygen.

The "monkeys in the mouths" swarmed forward and feasted on the pile of corpses in the middle.

One of the smaller ones couldn't compete or squeeze in, but somehow it noticed the head of Monk Hua, who was not far from Zhang Wuxun, and excitedly pounced over, taking two bites.

Suddenly, it seemed to smell something, raised its head and turned around, its yellow-glowing eyes locking onto Zhang Wuxun standing in the gap.

Its tiny head opened its large mouth, bared its ferocious fangs, and its bare paws fiddled with the bronze bell hanging from its thin neck.

Zhang Wuxun felt a sudden jolt of fear and sensed something was wrong. He quickly moved the gun barrel to aim at the monkey in the mouth, but before he could fire, the monkey seemed to sense the danger, raised its neck, and let out a piercing and unpleasant shriek.

A gunshot rang out, and blood sprayed everywhere.

The sharp sound stopped abruptly.

The monkey's head and body separated instantly.

But it was too late. At this moment, all the monkeys in the mouths stopped eating, and their bald heads rotated at an unbelievable degree, as if they had no bones, all looking towards the crack.

Then, more monkeys with piercing cries came out and swarmed towards the crack, their movements as swift as lightning.

A series of gunshots rang out as Zhang Wuxun and Fatty fired bullet after bullet, repeatedly knocking down the monkey that was leaping into the crevice.

But these mouth monkeys seemed endless, like a tide, and the dead mouth monkeys were devoured by their companions until not even bones remained.

These little monsters are so cold-blooded it's chilling.
