Chapter 71 Cardan's Light Cavalry
Chapter 71 Cardan's Light Cavalry
"Damn it! Get out of here!" a cavalryman from Los Sannier roared, raising his lance.
"Roar!" The orc's roar faintly came from the woods behind him.
"The orcs have indeed accelerated their northward march!" The cavalry captain spat as he galloped through the woods.
"Reassemble! If you scatter and try to escape, you'll be picked off one by one!" The cavalry captain was astute. They weren't professionals, just cavalrymen on horseback. Scattered, they were no match for the professional orc vanguard.
"The fighting has already broken out in the north! I knew the south wouldn't be peaceful!" a cavalryman said angrily.
The orcs from Togol successfully deceived Peter Gro and Caslo. They hid deep in the forest by day and night, creating the illusion that the main force was still slowly moving north. If Whitewing and Iovia hadn't been cautious enough to send out the city's only cavalry unit to scout, they might have really been fooled by the orcs.
"Brothers! We are the light cavalry of the Kadan tribe! Do not give up hope! Remain loyal to the King and the tribe..." shouted several leading light cavalrymen.
With the shouts of the men, the scattered cavalrymen were gradually gathered together. Heavy breaths came from their mouths and the mouths of their warhorses, which were particularly noticeable in the cold winter.
"Don't give up... Escape the forest! We..." The piercing shout ended a falling axe.
"Damn it! They're in the trees!" The sharp-eyed cavalryman spotted the orc scouts hidden in the dense canopy of evergreen trees.
"Kill!" the leading light cavalryman roared, throwing his short spear with a casual gesture.
"Chirp chirp chirp!" A shrill screech came from the orc's mouth as he casually drew his broken steel sword from his waist and slashed away the javelin.
"Professional Orc—" The warning was only half-sent before the cavalryman's head was ripped off by an orc descending from the sky. However, his death successfully alerted the cavalry behind him.
"Get lost!" Immediately afterward, the cavalrymen did not use their weapons to meet the attack, but instead chose a more effective method of attack. Their massive warhorses slammed into the orc warriors in front of them with the force of thunder.
"Crack!" The crisp, melodious sound of bones breaking was the most beautiful music he had ever heard in his life.
"Don't get separated! Watch out for enemies hiding in the treetops ahead!" Several cavalrymen who had dodged the flying axes shouted a warning to their companions, and at the same time took out their bows and arrows and began to fire. Although the Kadan tribe, originally a nomadic people, had few cavalrymen, they still had a skilled cavalry like all nomadic tribes.
"Damn it!" The cavalrymen's eyes turned red as they watched their comrades fall from their horses and die one after another.
"Don't die here! The king needs us! Our families are waiting for us to come home!" The three remaining cavalry squad leaders desperately tried to encourage the fleeing light cavalrymen.
"These damned orcs!" a cavalryman gritted his teeth angrily, his clenched fists bleeding.
"Don't stop! Get through this forest quickly! Los Sannier is just ahead!" The cavalry captain roared like a madman as they saw that the dark forest was just a few miles away. They knew that the newly formed Kingdom of Akvia needed this mobile force. Apart from the noble knights in the kingdom, they were the last mobile force in the entire kingdom.
"Ow~"
"Wolf howl?"
"Damn it! It's a dire wolf!"
"The wolf riders are here! All assemble!"
The sudden howl of wolves behind them interrupted their thoughts. It was clear that the orcs wanted to leave this valuable cavalry in the forest. Presumably, Azog would be disgusted by any kind of soldier riding a horse. The Holy Knights of the Battle of Lonely Mountain had left an indelible psychological scar on Azog.
A muffled roar rang out, and suddenly a squad of wolf riders wielding steel sabers leaped out from behind fallen trees and charged at the crowd. "Spear formation!" The well-trained wasteland cavalry were not lambs to the slaughter; they raised their sharp spears high, aiming them at the wolf riders.
"Awooo~" The dire wolf howled in pain as it crashed into several spears, struggling to avoid the fleeing cavalry. The several bloody holes torn in its body by the spears told of the terrible lesson it had just learned.
"Captain! It seems there are no more orc scouts ahead!" a cavalryman rode up and said.
"That's right!" the cavalry captain said fiercely. It was already humiliating enough that a small group of orcs had outflanked them. They couldn't let the orcs occupy their entire retreat route, could they? If that happened, it would only prove that these cavalrymen were unbelievably slow-witted.
"Ah—" The whistling spiked club smashed into a careless cavalryman; his chainmail and leather armor were no match for this deadly heavy weapon.
"Thud! Crack!" The first sound was the tearing sound of the spear like flesh, and the second sound was the sound of the spear breaking under the high-speed impact!
The thundering hooves left behind only a convulsing orc and a dire wolf, dazed and confused by the ramming of the warhorse.
"Roar!" An orc chasing alongside the cavalryman seized the opportunity and pounced on his dire wolf.
"No!" The cavalryman beside him could only watch helplessly as his comrade and mount were knocked down, while he could only brush past them as the warhorse galloped away at high speed...
"Ugh..." With blood gushing from his throat, the cavalryman used his last bit of strength to plunge the dagger he was holding into the eye socket of the orc who had snapped his neck.
"Kill!" The highly flexible spear was swung around, and the orc, who had never expected the human in front of him to use such an unconventional move, was violently whipped off his dire wolf. Judging from the twisted angle of his head and neck after landing, it was clear that the guy was beyond saving.
More and more wolf riders came from behind, and for a moment, the air behind them was filled with the howling of wolves...
"Charge out!" The cavalrymen rushed out of the forest, the warm sunshine outside and the distant city of Los Santo Niel reminding them that they had arrived home!
"Quick! Let's go home!" the last cavalry squad leader roared, clutching his bloodied waist. The massive blood loss had blurred his vision, and he slowly slumped down on his horse...
"Roar! Kill them!" The enraged wolf rider commander brandished his blood-stained sword.
"Crunch~" Dozens of the hundreds of wolf riders chasing behind raised their hunting bows, and the crude iron bows made a teeth-grinding crunching sound.
With a muffled "bang," dozens of wolf-tooth arrows pierced the air and arrived.
"Dodge the arrows!" shouted a cavalryman who heard the commotion.
"Boom! Boom! Boom!" Most of the arrows missed their mark, and the few that did fall into the crowd were blocked by the people.
"Quick! The knights are here to meet us!"
In the distance, the city of Los Sannier had opened its gates, and countless Kadan knights clad in plate armor surged out like a tide.
"Kill them all!" Bai Yi, standing atop the city wall and looking at the less than half of the light cavalry, spoke with a voice that seemed to come from the depths of hell.
