Chapter 507 Battle for the Pass
Before dawn had even lit up the sky, smoke began to rise from the camp, as groups of warriors, in small groups, roasted bread stuck to their knives.
"Ready to depart!" Apophis Breo mumbled to several senior officers while munching on a crispy piece of bread.
"Yes, the soldiers are eating! We'll leave after we finish eating!" Olaf exchanged a glance with the other centurion.
"The knights are ready to depart at any time!" The great knight's face was flat, and his expressionless face made Olaf want to punch him.
"..." After exchanging a glance with another centurion, Olaf pursed his lips helplessly. These knights were like a herd of beasts of burden, incredibly resilient. Sometimes Olaf even thought that if there were enough knights, there would be no need for these infantrymen at all. After all, a group of knights could go up in a day or two, why bother with these troublesome soldiers? Constantly marching like turtles...
“Yes, make sure the soldiers are well-fed! We won’t have a chance to stop for a meal along the way!” Apophis Breo nodded.
“In fact, we have already given the order!” Olaf and another centurion said solemnly. As officers, they were not so lacking in foresight. The fierce battle they were about to face meant they would not have much time to rest, so this meal was likely to be the last breakfast for many of them.
……
"Fellow countrymen! Our goal is ahead! Take it! Our territory will be our stronghold! The glory of the King's House will live on forever!" Apophis Breo roared.
"Let's go!" Apophis Breo commanded.
He also ordered his soldiers to bury all non-essential supplies, and all the Shire horses were unharnessed from their sleds and instead carried the soldiers' armor or arrows. This was to lighten the soldiers' load and speed up the march.
Apophis Breo turned and took a deep look at the locked camp, then followed the group without looking back. He knew that if they won this battle, they would have a chance to come back and retrieve the supplies; if they failed... then the supplies would be useless.
"Success or death!" Apophis Breo's eyes revealed an unprecedented ferocity. Just as Roland longed for the revival of the empire, Apophis Breo also eagerly hoped for the revival of his family, and was even willing to pay any price for it!
……
"Huff, huff, huff!" Apophis Breo panted heavily, looking at the winding mountain road and the pass hidden among the peaks.
What Apophis Breo didn't know was that if they didn't take this ancient pass now, the expanding Beonians would also occupy it years later. It was only after the Beonians occupied the area that the pass became completely unobstructed...
“After the first Battle of Azanubiza, this place was briefly safe, but then the orcs returned… The second Battle of Azanubiza did not affect this place, but the garrison here should be relocated!” Apophis Breo said to the group, pointing to the map.
"The garrison won't be increased, will it?" the Grand Knight said with a dark face.
"Thank you so much!" Olaf's face darkened. He really wasn't afraid of jinxing things!
“Probably not. His Highness told me that the Lonely Mountain Expedition passed through here! They scattered most of the orc garrison.” Apophis Breo shook his head.
“Orcs usually live in tribes. It’s only been a little over a year. Even if orcs were born in the Year of the Pig, they couldn’t possibly have a thousand orcs out of thin air!” Olaf shook his head. If there were no unexpected circumstances, the orcs here should still be the same tribe as before, and one that had been decimated.
"Then can we try a direct assault?" The great knight drew his sharp knight's sword!
"Yes, I hope you can withstand the onslaught of logs and rolling stones!" Olaf gestured for them to proceed. Although he looked down on orcs, they still possessed some basic defensive equipment, not to mention the immense strength of the trolls. Orcish logs and rolling stones were worlds apart from human logs and rolling stones. Getting hit by a human log might at least result in a proper burial, but a solid hit from an orc would mean being scooped up in a wooden tub after the battle. The King's Landing knights glanced at the steep mountainside, swallowed hard, and knew that knights were just brutes, not idiots; sending themselves to their deaths would be a sign of a dragon trampling their brains.
“The strategist is right!” Apophis Breo nodded seriously, and everyone immediately burst into laughter, easing the tense atmosphere somewhat.
"Alright, let's get back to the point. We can't just charge in blindly, or the orcs will be laughing all the way to the bank!" Apophis Breo said seriously.
"Knights, dismount and fight on foot! Knights in front! Armored soldiers behind! No matter what happens, do not stop! Even if I die! Do you understand?" Apophis Breo stared intently at the group.
The men swallowed hard, opened their mouths but said nothing.
"Do you understand now!" Apophis Breo growled.
"Understood!" The group, jolted awake by Apophis Breo's shout, quickly nodded in agreement.
"We're fighting all the way ahead and can't keep track of the lord... Please keep an eye on him for us!" The great knight quietly pulled Olaf aside and whispered in his ear.
"Don't worry, the master will be fine! Unless he steps over my dead body!" Olaf nodded firmly.
“We will attack before dusk! We must capture the main buildings of the Old Pass before nightfall! Otherwise, the darkness will be the orcs’ best cover!” Apophis Breo ordered.
"Good!" Everyone nodded in agreement.
"Tell the soldiers to leave no survivors! Regardless of age! Kill everyone who is breathing except our own!" Apophis Breo exuded a murderous aura.
“These orcs don’t deserve any sympathy. They’ve been occupying this place for a long time and have harmed countless travelers… Don’t feel guilty about killing them all!” Olaf added. Because he was afraid that people would feel guilty about killing old and young orcs, he made a point of explaining. However, he found that everyone was looking at him strangely.
"Huh? Did I say something wrong?" Olaf stammered.
“No, well said! But you probably don’t need to emphasize it. Look at the soldiers’ eyes.” Apophis Breo shrugged at Olaf.
“I’m more worried now that they’re so bloodthirsty they won’t be able to find a single survivor to question!” Apophis Breo said sheepishly.
"That's really great... no, it's such a shame!" Olaf tried to look sad.
"Has anyone told you that the acting is fake..." Apophis Breo's lips twitched.
