The Lord of the Rings: Lords of Middle-earth.
Chapter 497 Unknown Origin
The commotion in the city alerted Queen Nyx. After inquiring with her guards, she learned what had happened in the city and hurriedly lifted her skirt to look for Roland.
……
"Roland! How is the situation?" Nyx rushed into the council hall.
"Your Majesty, good day!" Omske and Yunfeng quickly stood up and bowed, and even Caslo, who was watching the commotion, quickly stood up and patted his chest in a salute.
"You're here? Have a seat!" Roland didn't speak but waved his hand, gesturing for Nyx to sit down.
Upon hearing this, Nyx obediently sat down next to Roland, tilting his head to look at everyone.
"So two days have passed... and we still haven't found the source, is that right?" Roland sighed, rubbing his head, which ached.
“The number of sick people in the city is increasing, and even some ordinary soldiers have fallen ill…” Omske frowned.
"Who is the city's garrison commander now?" Roland asked, frowning. After all, Baron Lance and Baron Marcus were constantly rotating their duties between Swiftstream City and Delwin Town.
"It was Baron Lance, but he's fallen too," Yun Feng said awkwardly, rubbing his temples.
"..." Roland's lips twitched. Well, the city guards have all fallen. What a mess!
"If I remember correctly, most of the ordinary soldiers are at Lulong Fortress..." Roland asked doubtfully.
"In fact, we've implemented a rotation system because the orcs haven't been able to cause any trouble lately. We planned to rotate the soldiers for rest and leave... Well, the returning Swift Infantry are basically all in bed." Omske said with a wry smile. They'd just given everyone sick leave all at once.
"Bang!" Roland slammed his fist on the huge long table in anger, and everyone could feel the table bounce.
"The table is very expensive..." Yunfeng mumbled.
"..." Roland's eyes twitched a few times, and his fist clenched and then relaxed.
"Alright, let's think of a way to resolve this!" Seeing that Wolong Roland and Fengchu Yunfeng were about to start fighting again, Omsk, knowing he couldn't add fuel to the fire, quickly changed the subject.
"Wait!" Nyx stretched out his hands and pressed down to quiet everyone down.
"So can you tell me the specifics of the current situation?" Nyx asked slowly, completely bewildered.
“Yes, Your Majesty, the situation is like this…” Omsk quickly told Nyx the general situation.
"So you think it was poisoning and a curse?" Nyx asked.
“Of course, after all, we don’t have the conditions for a plague outbreak here!” Roland shook his head. Without a battlefield or natural disasters, without corpses and a filthy environment, there is no breeding ground for a plague.
"By the Dragon God, I'm starting to miss the priesthood of the Royal Order of Priests. A bunch of priests would go over and cast a purification spell, and all the plagues would disappear without a trace!" Omske reminisced. The plague curses of the Dark Faction in Lord of the Rings were disgustingly bad. Apart from the skills of a few Light Mages, only the skills of priests could deal with these nasty things.
"Stop reminiscing. The truth is, we only have a few second-tier priests left besides a third-tier temple guard priest. They're struggling to even deal with the infected," Yun Feng bluntly stated, laying down the facts. "Can't we at least have a moment of nostalgia?" Roland pouted. He also missed the Royal Priests from the game. In the Lord of the Rings game, whenever a plague broke out on Imperial territory, the Royal Priests would definitely rush over and apply a purification spell, clearing away not only the plague but also the dust!
Is the title of "Evil Spirit Buster" given for nothing? Under the light, evil spirits will be banished!
"Of course, it would be even better if it were the Royal Holy Knights!" Omsk imagined.
"...Stop daydreaming!" Roland grinned, getting increasingly absurd. The Paladin Order was practically as rare as the Dragon Knights. If he had a Paladin Order, why would he be searching for the source of the plague? He'd be launching a counter-offensive against Mordor!
"Any clues?" Nyx ignored the others on YY and went straight to the point.
“No, Ivy was the first to notice something was wrong, because the large number of sick people caught Pastor Ivy’s attention,” Roland told Nyx.
“This is troublesome…” Nyx shook his head in disappointment. It was the priest who discovered the problem first, rather than the first patient, which meant that the person who had actually come into contact with the source might have already disappeared into the crowd.
……
“Ivy, do you have any recollection of your first patient?” Nyx asked.
“...In fact, people with typhoid fever have been coming here for treatment recently…” Ivy’s facial muscles twitched. Although she was wearing the mask Roland had instructed her to wear, the helpless expression on Ivy’s face was still visible.
"Ahem! Your Highness, I suggest you don't come here... It's not safe here." A weak voice came.
"Lord Lance!" Nyx peeked out and saw Lance lying on the bed, half-dead.
"Your Highness!" Ivy cast a purification spell on Nyx and then ushered her out.
“We’re short-staffed right now, and many people’s conditions are worsening. If you don’t have anything else to do, please don’t come and cause trouble.” Ivy and the other priests were almost out of mana, and she glanced at Nyx weakly as she spoke.
……
“Roland, I think we should ask other kingdoms for help…” Nyx hurriedly found Roland, but before he could finish speaking, Roland pulled out a letter and threw it at him.
"Take a look for yourself!" Roland grabbed his hair with both hands and rubbed it vigorously.
"Ah!" Nyx exclaimed in surprise after glancing around. Well, now the Northern Kingdoms were in dire straits. People were already dying in Vale. The dwarves, because of their stronger resistance to dark forces (as evidenced by the fact that the Ring's corrupting effect on the dwarf king was less than that on humans), were only experiencing a loss of power and discomfort among their infected members. The elves, on the other hand, were evenly matched with the plague, neither able to defeat the other. The plague had no effect on the elves, who believed in the power of nature and directly used the power of nature to fight against the plague. Thranduil was probably having a great time "playing" with it.
"Forget it, don't even think about it. I doubt anyone can help." Roland shrugged. There were no deaths in Swiftstream City yet. But there were a bunch of people half-dead, including Lance. Roland couldn't help but purse his lips. Court nobles were indeed not very healthy. After all, professionals were definitely more resistant to plague than ordinary people... well, except for Lance.
"We should be thankful that no one was killed!" Roland shook his head.
“Spring is almost here. Even if there are no casualties… these infected people are exhausted. They can’t cultivate the land, hunt, or produce anything. On top of that, we have to spare people to take care of them. If this drags on, the kingdom will be finished!” Renault, who had rushed back in a hurry, burst in from outside after hearing Roland’s words.
"Your Highness, we can't delay any longer. Spring planting cannot be neglected! We have tens of thousands of people to feed. Even if they don't die from the plague, a number of people will starve to death if this continues." Renault saw through the conspiracy behind it at a glance.
