Chapter 1 Preface

In the sixteenth year of Minghua, in the northernmost part of the Great Chang Kingdom, it began to snow at the beginning of winter and lasted for a whole month.

The surrounding mountains were all covered in snow.

This place has long been deserted, devoid of birds and human traces.

But a horse was traveling through the snow, and soon, because the snow was too thick, the horse could no longer run.

Two people dressed in black cloaks dismounted from their horses, each carrying a white object in their arms.

They walked hurriedly through the snow, glancing around every now and then.

"Alright, just leave it here. We've already walked two hundred miles; any further and we'll have to cross mountains!"

"Sigh, I still feel a little reluctant, after all..."

"If you take someone's money, you're obligated to solve their problems. Enough with the nonsense! We need to get back to find lodging. It's so cold, we're freezing to death!"

Not long after, with a "bang," something was thrown into the snow. The two men didn't even glance at it, rubbing their hands together as they hurried toward their horses.

The brothers Wang Chuanfu and Wang Chuanman were walking dejectedly along the road when they suddenly heard the sound of horses' hooves not far away.

Before the two could react, Wang Chuanman was hit hard and staggered a few steps. The horse stopped and immediately rode away.

"Fourth brother, are you alright?" Wang Chuanfu immediately went forward to check on him.

Wang Chuanman patted the snow off his clothes and stood up: "It's nothing, I'm dressed warmly, and the snow is thick too. Brother, let's hurry up, it's getting colder and colder, and it might snow heavily before dark, so we should go back quickly."

At that moment, a light snow was falling from the sky, and the two brothers didn't bother to cover themselves.

Not long after they left, Wang Chuanman suddenly kicked something.

"Oh, it looks like a package!" The thing was originally on the snow, covered by a thin layer of snow.

Because it is white, it is not easily noticed.

Wang Chuanfu also looked down and said, "Could it be that those two lost it? They were running so fast, maybe the package fell off their horse."

Wang Chuanman was also anxious: "Oh dear, what should we do? We don't have any horses, we can't catch up with them."

"Take it back to the village chief first, and we'll talk about it after the snow melts," Wang Chuanfu sighed. "We haven't even finished our own business yet."

As the two brothers talked, they picked up the white package, only to find that it was a piece of white velvet.

A corner of the velvet was torn open, and the contents rolled right out.

It fell straight onto the snow.

It was a thinly dressed child who looked only one or two years old.

Perhaps it was hurt from the fall, for its tightly closed eyes opened slightly, like a weak deer glancing at the world. Before its bright eyes could be fully revealed, it quickly closed again.

Her cheeks were rosy, like ripe persimmons, and her breathing was barely perceptible.

"Oh, it's a baby!"

With just one glance, the two grown men dared not look any longer. In the freezing cold, such a shiver could be disastrous!
Wang Chuanman was in a flurry of activity, quickly spreading the velvet cloth he was holding over his body and then trying to retrieve the doll from the ground.

"What a disaster! Quick, wrap it up!"

Wang Chuanfu saw it too, and without thinking of anything else, he subconsciously took off the coarse cloth scarf around his neck and wrapped another layer of flannel around it.

Wang Chuanman did the same, but both of their fingers were ice-cold, and they didn't dare to touch the doll's body temperature.

In just a few breaths, the two men broke out in a cold sweat.

"Brother, why is this child's face so red? Is he hot?"

Wang Chuanman is only 23 years old. His family is poor, and he only got married two years ago. They haven't been able to have a baby in the past two years, so he doesn't know anything about these things. "This is bad! The baby has a fever! My second cousin's nephew died last year from a fever like that. Quick, quick, let's go home and let my mother take a look!"

Wang Chuanfu patted Wang Chuanman on the shoulder, took all the miscellaneous things from his hands, and told him to hold the child in peace.

The two hurried towards Hujia Village ahead.

Hujia Village is located on the northeast side of this mountain. The mountain roads are rugged and difficult to travel, and they are even more dangerous in snowy weather.

Fortunately, the two brothers were already used to walking like this, and they wouldn't fall even if they closed their eyes.

What would normally be a half-hour walk through the snow, they covered in just 25 minutes.

As soon as I reached the village entrance, I saw Old Master Hu walking unsteadily under the banyan tree, his hands behind his back, smoking his long pipe.

There are two roads at the entrance of the village. One road leads down the cliff, and after walking two miles, you reach the Qujiang River. The Qujiang River is swift and not navigable by boat.

One road leads to the right, which is also the only road connecting the village to the outside world.

"Young men of the Wang family, have you caught something good?" Old Master Hu asked loudly when he saw the two brothers, one carrying hunting traps and the other clutching something tightly in his arms.

This sound caused some villagers to peek out from their doorways, but that was all they did.

In this cold weather, families without warm clothes at home simply cannot go out.

Wang Chuanman wiped the snow off his face and quickly replied, "We found a baby outside."

"What? Are you all starving? You're even eating babies? That won't do! There's no such rule in our village!" Old Master Hu exclaimed, his eyes wide.

He knew that some villagers were so hungry in the snow that they had started eating babies.

Their village cannot break this precedent!

"No, no," Wang Chuanfu exclaimed. "Grandpa Hu, this child has a fever. We need to take him back to my mother right away. If only Dr. Hu were here, he could take a look too."

An auntie called from the window, "Wang family eldest son, have you found a baby boy? Don't you have enough boys in your family?"

"Is it a girl?" Wang Chuanfu wasn't quite sure either.

The baby's cheeks were flushed red from the fever, its eyes were tightly closed, and its lips were chapped, making it difficult to tell whether it was a boy or a girl.

But judging from the dolls he'd seen in his house, something this pretty must be a girl.

They don't have any girls in their family.

"Oh dear, what kind of terrible thing have you done! Get rid of her immediately! What's the point of taking a little girl home? She's a money-loser!" The aunt spat. "Your family is starving to death yourselves, why are you taking a little girl home? Your mother will be driven mad by you!"

Before the aunt could finish speaking, a powerful soprano voice came from the side.

"Jiang Dahua, if you don't shut your stinking mouth, I'll throw manure in your mouth! What a cursed thing! Pay up, pay up, pay up! Why didn't you pay your entire Jiang family's ancestral graves with your money? Eldest brother, fourth brother, what are you standing there for? Get back here!"

In the middle of the village, on the snow-covered ground of the dam, stood an old woman wearing a brown cotton-padded coat, her hands on her hips.

Even though it was still four or five hundred meters away, the sound was incredibly penetrating and reached everyone's ears.

Wang Chuanfu and Wang Chuanman dared not delay any longer. After greeting the people here, they quickly ran along the village road.

When Grandma Wang saw her two sons approaching, she stretched out her hands and said, "Give them to me!"

Wang Chuanfu, with a pained expression, gently held up what he was holding: "Mom, we didn't have anything to wear when we went out this time. The snow is too heavy—"

"I know you two are unreliable. By the time you come back with the stolen goods, your mother will have already passed her seventh day memorial!" Old Mrs. Wang rolled her eyes so hard they almost reached the sky.

The old lady glared fiercely at Wang Chuanman, then gently took the baby he was protecting from his arms, her movements gentle but her words sharp: "You picked up a baby and didn't even bother to get home? What are you arguing about with those bastards? You're all such a handful, you can't even do a good deed properly, and you call yourself Chuanman! You idiot!"
