Chapter 366 Burnt Corpse
Old Charles staggered as he slowly stepped into the still-warm coal pile, carefully digging into the body hidden by the ash.

During the excavation, although a few tears glistened in his cloudy eyes, his tightly furrowed brows gradually relaxed.

Yaro, clutching his heavy sword, silently observed old Charles's every move, secretly analyzing in his heart: "Old Charles has been through many life and death, so he can calmly accept the death of his companion. It is fortunate that his companion did not turn into a monster."

"It looks normal."

"As for Hami..."

Yaro glanced at it.

Hami's expression was blank, his arms hanging naturally, but his fingertips were trembling slightly. His eyes were lifeless as he stared at the charred corpse that the old man was gradually digging out.

"Are you scared out of your wits?"

Following his gaze, Yaro glanced at the emaciated, charred corpse.

The charred corpse was blackened, its arms wrapped around its knees, its fists clenched, and its cracked toes were also tightly curled up. The whole body was curled up in a ball, like a shivering, curled-up baby.

His back resembled a charred lamb chop, covered in carbonized, lacerated wounds through which one could clearly see thin bones.

The rest of the body was also rotten, like minced meat spread out on top. Only upon closer inspection could one see that those areas were covered with dense teeth marks, some so deep that the bone was visible. Even though the body had carbonized and dehydrated, those horrific teeth marks were still incredibly clear.

His head was twisted and raised, like a turtle that had just hatched, his mouth was stretched wide open, and his facial features were contorted in pain.

No one can imagine how many undead monsters were tearing him apart in the moment of his death.

I dare not speculate... whether he was dead or alive in the brief moment the flames rose.

Was he bitten to death by an undead monster, or burned to death by flames?
Or perhaps... he died of suffocation?

Regardless, he died in the end.

That youthful face was now contorted into a grimace; after being roasted by the charcoal fire, his pain and resentment were forever frozen in that moment.

Yaro lowered his head and looked down.

"I have no connection with charred corpses, and even seeing the expressions of death makes me uncomfortable. What would Hami feel like?"

Thump, thump...

The sound of each of the five charred corpses falling was like a blow to Hami's heart. His face seemed calm, but the muscles at the corners of his eyes kept twitching, and the muscles in his legs twitched several times, but he remained in place.

"Hami, Hami!"

Old Xia's calls roused Hami from his daze.

"Ah, ah? Oh!" After a moment of confusion, Hami finally came to his senses, forced a smile, and turned around to reply, "Old Man Charles, what's wrong? Is something the matter?"

Although Hami is still a minor, he has experienced hardships. Although he was frightened and upset, he has not completely lost his mind.

"Stop overthinking. Go and gather up the unburnt timber around here," Old Charles said, having neither the mood nor the time to wait for Hami to slowly grieve. "If we delay too long, our superior, the powerful Baron Claire, a full-fledged knight, will definitely come looking for us personally. Who knows how he will punish us then."

Baron Claire?
Yarrow wanted to observe old Charles's expression, but the old man had already lowered his head, holding a broken piece of wood, and skillfully began to dig at the ground with one hand. Yarrow's eyes flickered slightly as he pondered, "Baron Claire? Wasn't he at the front lines? How come he's here? Could it be that old Charles has only heard Claire's name somewhere and is saying that to intimidate me?"

There were many unburnt pieces of wood at the edge. These were small, scattered pieces of wood because the surrounding planks collapsed to the ground after the flames had burned to a certain extent, extinguishing the spreading fire due to lack of oxygen.

Hami glanced around and asked in confusion, "Old Man Charles, what do you need all that broken wood for?"

"Can't you tell? I'm going to dig a pit and cremate them."

"Cremation?" Hami's voice rose several octaves. "Old Man Charles, didn't you say you were going to take them back?"

Old Charles looked up. "Do you think the two of us can carry all five of them? Even if we could, could we carry them this far?"

Hami remained silent.

The five men were all dehydrated and withered. If they disregarded their own fighting ability, Hami was confident that he could carry two of them, and Old Xia could carry three more without any problem.

Even without Old Charles's further explanation, Hami understood that they could not entrust their lives entirely to the stranger beside them.

Old Charles continued digging, muttering, "Perhaps... this is better. We couldn't guarantee they wouldn't wake up halfway through and turn into those emotionless monsters anyway."

“Rebury and burn them. We won’t have to worry about them turning into those monsters, nor will we have to bother to arrange new graves for them. This place was once our home, and it’s good that they are buried here…”

Yaro was unaware of their previous plans.

Even if they knew, as old Charles just said, Yaro still couldn't possibly bind his own hands and carry a time bomb on his back without knowing anything.

Old Charles was wary of Yaro with a humble attitude, but wasn't Yaro also wary of them?
However, a thought popped into Yaro's mind.

Keep following these two!

If they really were soldiers led by Baron Claire, if Baron Claire really stayed in this area and didn't leave!
Therefore, Baron Claire must have known some of the circumstances around him.

By following these two, we can naturally find Claire. Once we find Claire, we can quickly understand the surrounding situation and find the key to the outbreak of the undead calamity, thereby destroying and preventing it.

Even if... there really is that 'what if' situation, and they really are spies for the Fernando family, the worst outcome would be nothing more than a fierce battle, with the outcome uncertain.

Winning might directly solve the problem and also give you a lot of experience points.

Even if they lose, they have a substitute puppet to save their lives, so it's not something they can't afford to lose; it's just a "maybe" in this "what if".

Thinking this, Yaro smiled kindly, stepped forward, and said warmly, "Old Man Charles, let me help you dig."

"Oh dear, how can such a thing get your hands dirty, adults?" Old Charles said, looking alarmed and refusing repeatedly.

But Yaro didn't stand on ceremony with him at all. Old Charles was not as strong as him, and he didn't dare to openly oppose such a matter, so he was easily pushed out by Yaro.

"It's alright, old man Charles. You and little Hami go and collect the wood. Everyone, hurry up, or it'll get dark soon."
