Harry Potter and the Great Old Ones
Chapter 12 Gringotts
Chapter 12 Gringotts
“Yes, that’s a goblin.” Hagrid said calmly in a low voice as they walked up the white stone steps toward the man.
The goblin was about a head shorter than Harry, with a dark face that exuded intelligence, a pointed mustache, and Harry noticed that his hands and feet were unusually long.
As they entered, the fairy bowed to them. Then a second door appeared before them, silver in color, with the following inscriptions on its two doors:
Please come in, stranger.
However, you should be careful about what will happen if you are greedy.
Those who relentlessly demand and gain without effort will inevitably face the most severe punishment.
Therefore, if you wish to take a fortune from our underground vault that has never belonged to you, thief, you have been warned: what you will gain is not wealth, but retribution.
“If you’re thinking of robbing a bank, you’re crazy,” Hagrid said.
But Harry did steal it once in seventh grade, Tierra thought to herself.
Two goblins bowed to them and led them into a tall, marble hall. About a hundred goblins sat on high stools behind a long counter, some weighing coins on bronze scales, others examining gems with eyepieces, hastily recording their observations in large ledgers. The hall had countless doors, each leading to a different place, and many goblins guided visitors through these doors. Hagrid and Harry walked toward the counter.
"Good morning," Hagrid greeted a goblin who was idle.
“We’re going to take some money from Harry Potter’s vault, and also Tierra Witch’s student loan.”
"Your key and proof of Hogwarts," the goblin said with a touch of arrogance.
“Yes, yes, I remember bringing it with me, um… I put it somewhere.” Hagrid rummaged in the deep pockets of his leather jacket for a while, taking everything out and placing it on the counter, accidentally spilling a handful of moldy dog biscuits on the goblin’s ledger. The goblin wrinkled its nose. Harry watched as the goblin on his right weighed a pile of rubies the size of red-hot coals.
"Aha, found it." Hagrid finally said, picking out a small key and a small piece of paper from the pile and handing them to the fairy.
"It should be fine," the fairy said after carefully reading the letter, then picked up the key and examined it closely.
“I also have a letter from Professor Dumbledore here.” Hagrid gathered up all the clutter scattered on the table. He took another letter from the heart pocket of his leather jacket and said solemnly, “It’s about that thing in Vault 713.”
Although Hagrid spoke very softly, Tiera still managed to catch it, and at the same time, she squeezed the thing in her jacket pocket.
The fairy carefully examined the letter.
“Very good.” He said, handing the letter back to Hagrid, then counting out one hundred Galleons from the counter and placing the heavy bag into a dark brown leather pouch. He then used a quill to draw a line on the letter Hagrid had first handed him, before handing the leather pouch containing the one hundred Galleons and the letter to Tiera.
Tierra took the leather bag and the letter, and saw Hogwarts's review comments on the letter regarding the student loan.
The column representing first-year students has been crossed out by that fairy, who gave her 100 Galleons in return.
“You can come back to collect six more student loans in the future,” the goblin sitting at the counter said. “If you have Muggle currency, we can also exchange it for Galleons for you, but you can only handle one hundred Galleons per year.”
"Yes, Mr. Fairy, please exchange 100 Galleons for me." Tiera took out the stack of pounds from her leather bag, counted out 500 pounds, and handed it to the fairy.
"Another 1% handling fee is required," the fairy's shrill voice said again.
Tiera had no choice but to take out another five pounds and give them to the fairy.
After the fairy accepted the five pounds, she then pointed out one hundred Galleons and gave them to Tiera.
“Alright, you’ve finished your business here. I’ll have someone take you to these two underground vaults. Grip!” Grip was another goblin. Hagrid and Haretiara followed Grip out of one of the doors into the hall.
"What's this child doing following us?" Rapunzel stared at Tiera with sharp eyes. "You can just wait here."
“Um, I… I think, I’d like to go with you to see the Wizarding Bank’s vault, is that alright, Harry?” Tyella seemed startled by the pull ring and stammered.
Tyella knew that once Harry spoke up, the goblins' objections were useless.
“He’s with us, what’s wrong with you, Gripper?” Hagrid stepped between Gripper and Tyella, saying sarcastically, “He’s a student of Hogwarts. You’re not afraid a student like him will rob your bank, are you?”
Harry nodded in agreement.
Seeing that Hagrid and Harry both insisted, Griphook didn't say anything and turned to lead the three of them deeper into Gringotts.
Rapunzel and Tierra didn't know each other at all, let alone have any personal grudges. The fairy just instinctively hated anyone who took gold coins from them.
This is their nature, like a greedy spider.
“What is ‘something’ in Vault 713?” Harry asked.
“I can’t tell you that,” Hagrid said mysteriously. “It’s top secret. It’s about Hogwarts. Dumbledore entrusted this to me because he trusted me. It’s my job, and I can’t tell you.”
Grip opened the door for them. Harry expected to see more marble, but he was surprised. Before him was a narrow stone corridor, illuminated by burning torches. The corridor led down a steep slope to a small railway. Grip whistled, and a small cart came rushing toward them along the tracks. They climbed on, though Hagrid struggled to squeeze his much taller frame into the cramped minecart.
Then they set off.
At first, they sped along the maze-like, winding paths. Harry tried to remember the way, turning left, right, right, left, then right again at the forks in the road, then left again—he couldn't remember any of it. The clattering little cart seemed to know the way on its own, needing no handles to drive it.
The icy air howled past, and even Harry, wearing his glasses, felt a bit of pain from the wind. Tyella, needless to say, was even more affected, clinging tightly to Hagrid's thick arm with her eyes closed, feeling as thrilled as if she had been on a roller coaster in her past life, only this time the protection was rather rudimentary.
They turned left and right for a while before finally stopping.
When the minecart stopped, Tiera nearly vomited, but managed to hold it back. Her face was ashen as she followed the pull ring to an iron gate.
The door lock opened with a pull ring. A thick plume of green smoke billowed out, and when it cleared, Harry gasped. Inside were piles of gold coins, silver bars, and mountains of bronze Knuts.
“This is all yours,” Hagrid said with a smile.
All of them belong to Harry! How enviable! Tyella's eyes were practically popping out of her head.
Harry is the same.
Hagrid and Tyrell helped Harry put the Galleons into the bag.
Harry even wanted to give one to Tyella on the spot.
However, Tyella refused on the spot.
